Question:My painted turtle has had a scute removed to reveal a mostly hardened transparent scute beneath. ( I know, "thou shalt not pull of a turtle's scutes")There is a brownish sticky spot on it and there was a tiny drop of blood when it came off. I do not need a lecture about the care of my turtle, I just want to know if I need to dry dock him for a few days, or if I should super glue the spot, or if he will be ok, as long as his habitat remains well maintained.
Answers:
Just keep his habitat clean so bacteria doesn't get into the open sore. Don't feed him lettuce and offer lots of light and calcium.
If you have pet health issues consult a veterinarian. That said, I'd give him a good vitamin dose, access to lots of direct sunlight or a full spectrum light source from his favorite basking spot and some fresh live food, earth worms or crayfish, if at all possible.
Maybe a gold fish. Beef/chicken liver and beef heart.
If the container temperature is OK and the water is CLEAN and well filtered, not too much ammonia or nitrate, he should be OK. Most pet stores will do FREE water tests.
Slider care sheet, same as painted turtle:

Repta-Cal is a mineral/vitamin powder that may be sprinkled and wrapped into food for a dietary supplement source for aquatic turtles. It and other similar products are available at most pet stores that cater to reptile owners.
Good Luck !
