Yes they are, just don't put your finger in front of their food. We had a couple, Emily and Garfield that learned their names and came when I called them and followed me around in their pen.

Box turtles are very friendly i have two they are also pretty easy to clean you have to always make sure that they have fresh water and you have have to give them a bath and let them soak do that about once a week they need wood chips for the bedding in their cage, they HAVE to have a heat lamp
they love fresh fruits and vegetables i usually give them fresh fruits and vegetables (like almost any thing from cherry tomato's to spinach all fruits and veggies are suitable) about once a week, the rest of the time they get dry food but they would love you if you gave them fresh fruits and veggies all the time

P.S.S. they live 50-60 years and if you give them the fresh fruits and veggies everyday and take really good care of them they could possibly live 80-100 years
