Question:do they sometimes get confused with each other and end up making out?

yeah..it happened to me once-- I was drunk and this chipmunk was hitting on me..the next thing I knew was I was waking up an this ugly small 'squirrel' with black and whit stripes down his back was snoring next o me..and then it hit me..I'm never drinking again.

ABSOLUTELY NOT! Each is territorial as wild animals are. Also, wild animals do not mate with a different species.
If you watch carefully, you'll see that the chipmonk usually makes the first moves. They are much more agressive than squirrels and generally lose their virginity at an earlier age. You may want to leave some condoms around the yard, preferably ribbed, so that they don't over populate their habitat.
