My ferret sticks his tounge out and tries to lick the side of his mouth?

Question:For the last couple of days, my ferret has been sticking his tounge out and sort of licking the side of his mouth. We took him to the vets today, and they said he has a sore throat and gave him a jab. They didn't actually say what the illness was that he had - is this common with ferrets and does it have a name?

Answers:
Take him to an exotic animal vet. If it is just licking it could be anything . But excessive licking and pawing at the mouth could be one of the first signs of insulinoma.

happened to a friend also and he never got a name either. maybe no name?
Maybe he has a sore throat as a result of an ulcer, which is common in ferrets.

I find it interesting that you paid to take an animal to the vet and the vet didn't tell you what was wrong with your pet. If I were you I would first: call the vet and ask them for the diagnosis and second: find another vet. OR pay better attention when you are at the vet.
