Question:my ferret itchs like crazy but she dont have fleas she has been itching so bad she has an open sore on her body with brown crust like stuff around it whats wrong with her?
Answers:
The crusted sore may be a mast cell tumor. These tumors release histamine into the skin which causes intense itching. Best to get your girl in for a vet check. MCT's that are bothersome should be removed. Most are benign but they can be malignant so it's best to have them biopsied as well.
Take her to your vet.
Dry skin...
She might have some allergies ..you should take her to the VET ASAP !
skin condition or possibly infection
unfortunately she is have an alergic reaction has she been splashed with any thing you might try epi-soothe by nirbac its a hypoalergenic shampoo for dogs or a fuciderm carbomer gel but do not put on open sores and you will need to wear gloves as its no good for humans there may be damp in the hutch causing a fungal infection both products are avalible from your vet
Take her to the vet, she may have serious dermititis. Dont make her suffer, get it looked at today please.
OK...ferrets are naturally itchy critters BUT it is obvious that there is an exception with your ferret. Sores and bald spots, in connection with itching, is NEVER an 'OK' thing.
Your ferret needs to see a vet. There are skin diseases as well as adrenal disorders that can be associated with these symptoms. Blood-work will quickly determine which problem it is. Do not be under the false impression that this will just 'go away'. Even if the bald spot heals the underlying problem may still exist. Invest in your pets health and nip this problem in the bud.
I have to agree with alamahara. While ferrets are naturally itchy little critters, excessive itching is a problem and could be a symptom of serious underlying issues. Ferrets are very good at hiding illness and by the time obvious signs of a problem show up, the problem is well established. Children's Benedryl, 1/2 tsp, NO ACETAMENPHIN, will help with the itching but will not take care of the cause. Take your ferret to a good vet, for her sake and your peace of mind.
