Question:We will be driving 3600 miles over 41/2 days. I am not too worried about the cats (they are used to and don't mind car rides. They prefer to tag along up front on our laps actually), so we will pass on the sedatives. However, are there tips or advice from someone who has done this. anything I should expect, or prepare for? We are leaving in a week, and are trying to mentally prepare!
Answers:
Just make sure the cats have their shots and you bring proof of rabies (certificates, not tags) with you. States have regulations about the types of animals traveling over state lines and if anything happens and you dont have proof that your cats have shots you can get into trouble. Get health certificates from your vet before you leave. Some people think this is just for flying but its also for crossing state lines. You have to ask a vet about the hedgehogs- but every animal has some form of regulatory rule when it comes to traveling. Its how we control diseases with animals in this country. I'd also advise you not to let your cats roam free in the car. I've heard of people who do this with dogs and animals fall out of windows and get stuck under the brake pedal more often than you might think. You might think this would make your pets unhappy but better unhappy than dead.
No one else in the world who is their right mind would even think of doing this kind of stunt. Get rid of the zoo and get your life simplfied and in order.
I found this very useful. Go to a health food store and buy something called "Bach's Rescue Remedy" Dr. Bach from England years ago developed many holistic treatments made from flowers. Health food stores and a lot of drug stores carry Bach's Remedies. The Rescue Remedy is a liquid which you can put drops into the mouth of the animal or easier, into their water. I would start doing it the day before. The funny thing about RR is that it only seems to effect the problem and nothing else. There are no signs they have been sedated. They aren't groggy like they have been given anything yet they were calm. I gave this to my cats when I moved and also when I had two of them fixed. They wouldn't stop running around and jumping on the other cats. After the RR they just kind of relaxed and gave their little bodies time to heal. I hope this helps.
P.S. You can also take some yourself! I will see if I can find the URL for these products and post it for you to read up on.
