Advice regarding an ant farm?

Question:My son wants to build an ant farm. He's been fascinated by ants since seeing the movie "Ant Bully". I'd like to help him to build one, but maybe buying would be better. The prices don't seem too terribly high. What I am concerned about is cave-ins. My son is very hands-on. If he moves the glass box, will it cause the tunnels to collapse? If the tunnels collapse, will the ants be killed, or will they be able to dig themselves out? He's a very sensitive child, so I'd hate for him to accidentally kill his pets. Any good experiences with children and ant farms? And advice?

let that kid d it he is interested if my kid just wanted to build it cause its fun i would promblably say no but if he is interested and want to learn more then let your son have fun and do it!
when i was a kid the big red ants were every where.i would get a 1/2 gallon fruit jug with a top,put very small holes in the top,i would build a farm in the jug.it was perfect,no cost and safe they couldnt get out.and i would carry it around with me.as far as i know i never had a cave in.try it ,
Yes, ant farms are an observation system, not a hands-on system.
