Question:I just bought a appoloosa mare yesterday. She was fine in the ring (I bought her at an auction so she wouldn't go to the horse trader who i bidding against.) Her owners we're polite and offered to take her home since we didn't plan on buying so we didn't have our trailer. I got her home and turned out with my other mare. They sorted out their differences and ignore each other. BUT the new mare (Red) paces the fence line. The front fence and the side fence. She won't go over to the other side of the pasture at all. She's very strong and high spirited. Skiddish too. How can i help her to stop the pacing before she dies of a heat stoke?! She drinks some now and then. She was turned out on 200 acers of open land and came to the barn at night for grain and bed. My horse is turn out on 1 1/2 acres to fenced pasture and is outside 24/7. last night I put Red in the barn to calm her down. It worked until she went in to the pasture. She started the pacing again. What do I do?

Sounds like she is home sick !Thars why I don't buy my horses at auction you really don't know what you'll get. but since you have her go out and give her some feed and bring water and make her feel welcome... don't get hurt if she is not friendly but just try to make her feel more at home talking in a soothing voice... good luck
you could move some water to the side where she stays or you could put the two together and get them to become friends or something.
she is probably just nervous or homesick. more than likely she had a very good pasture buddy where she was previously. if you can it would be a good idea to but water where she is pacing but dont feed her there at all even if it is just a treat because she will learn that pacing is a good thing. if your other mare and your new one dont mind being together put them together if you can. it will help the new one feel more at home and it may give her something to do other than worry about leaving.
good luck
