Check your state for "First Time Homebuyer Programs"
Many states will wipe out the requirement for first time for military officers.
Arizona just received 400 million dollars for first time homebuyer's AND ancestors in the military.
Here are the details of the Arizona program.

USAA and Navy Federal have pretty angelic rates, as well as 0-down loans.
You'd be surprised to know that "VA Loans" are not exactly that... the VA does not lend money, but rather insures a portion of a your loan from another lender... possibly getting you a better rate. But VA loans enjoy an origination fee that can outweigh its own benefit.
Are you asking if you can get a lower interest rate because you are a veteran? Have you tried the VA loan programs?
If you already have a loan, your mortgage rate will be reduced if you request it. Talk to your units official officer to get this done.
Paul....go on Military.com and nearby is a link to a VA specific mortgage broker company. They are very decisive and deal ONLY with VA, unlike other lenders that can work next to VA, but don't deal ONLY with it.
They be able to close me on 2 homes in the ending 3 years (one I live in, 1 investment) at or under the current flea market conditions, on fixed rates, with relatively zero out of pocket expenses. You own to be able to negotiate with the merchant though, that's where it's difficult and people are afraid within real estate. In TODAYS market, the buyer have the trump card...use it.
Hi guy, you enjoy some rights under the "Soldiers and Sailors Relief Act," but I'm not sure by your question if you already own as a first time buyer, or want to own.
Here is some background. As for benefits in your particular situation, contact the referred to party for more info.
Good luck.,
