Assuming you're American, the American government is not Socialist close to France or elsewhere, they follow a mainly capitalistic system, where if you work you take paid. However, this looks like it's going to switch soon with the nationlisation of several private entities.
Why should the government (your fellow citizens) be responsible for your absence of planning? I myself have taken many precautions through smart money guidance, living within my means and planning for unforseen difficulties to protect myself and line. I DO NOT WANT TO BAIL OUT PEOPLE WHO HAVE BEEN IRRESPONSIBLE! Because I have made sacrifices surrounded by previous years of otherwise collective frenzied greed, I hope to benefit now through purchase of a second home with a much depressed price.
