Where to hold pre-approval for home mortgage?

I am looking forwarding to buying a house (first time). The broker said I need to get a pre-approval first. Can I in recent times go to any bank and ask for the preapproval or should I be dedicated about choosing a bank? Is in attendance a fee involved? Thanks.
Answers:
Go to your own bank and ask them for a pre-approval, at hand is no cost. This will tell you how much you can afford to spend on a house, and will prevent you from wasting your time looking at places you can't afford.
You can go to a edge or to a mortgage broker. If you don't know a mortgage or loan agent, and if you know a real estate agent he/she can refer you to a loan agent. With pre-approved loan amount you won't be wasting time looking at houses that are not in your price extent. Usually, they won't charge you a fee for getting pre-approved because they want your business. They pay a charge to check your credit history.
I would ask some homeowners in your local nouns about some local banks and see how their experiences next to them were. Big banks similar to Wells Fargo are always pretty fair and undemanding to deal with but sometimes local bank are easiest to deal with. You can look on their websites and find out if they provide free pre approvals. Having a pre approval from one bank doesn't mean you own to go with them any (although having your credit run by more places won't help your mark, although they would be similar marks.)
Just do some research on the web and review the ratings. Zillow is a great place to start. Some lenders/brokers will charge an upfront fee such as credit report and the $ involved to run your loan scenario through their automated underwrite system. Total should not be more than $50-$60 though so if its more look elsewhere. Good luck with your first house!
My real estate agent handled it for me. We packed out a form for the credit check. It's basically a credit check to see how much mortgage you can qualify for. That way, you or your agent don't rubbish time looking at houses you have no way of affording. One outstandingly important thing to remember. When you start looking, do not clutch on any additional debt until after you close on the deal. Adding a credit card to your profile will disqualify you; you'll hold to do the pre-qualification process all over again. If there's a fee, it's compensated at closing. I don't remember because there were so various different fees and charges at closing.
some places do charge but most mortgage bankers do not. Open the yellow page and find them there
