Answers:
To be honest depending on the wood it can take months to stop completely however, using carbon in the filter will remove the majority of the discoloration.

Have you tried boiling it? It takes some out.
2-3 weeks is common. I never recommend boiling anything. It will mostly just soften the wood.
If you buy "activated carbon" available in most pet stores you can add some of that too the water and that will speed it up a little bit.
I have a 25lb piece of driftwood that has been putting off tannins for over 6 months. It all depends on the individual piece. Tannins won't hurt anything, and may even make your water more hospitable, depending on the species.
Scrub off all loose wood, even sandpaper it.
Soak in a pail first.
Change water everyday.
May consider boil for 20mins to kill off any harmful bactical hiden within the drift.
My 6kg log take 4days.
put it in hot -- not quite boiling water -- like you are making tea. do this a few times. it helps -- there will still be a little brown left but not as bad as it was.
Put the log in water for a day. Change the water every day. When the water is clear and not tea colored, you can put it into your tank. Activated carbon will also remove some of the color.
