2 goldfish - advice on cleaning?

Question:If I have 2 goldfish in a 35L tank, can anyone advise me how often to carry out cleaning etc to make sure I keep the waste levels etc down? I have a filter which came with my elite 35L style tank - supposedly designed for 5 goldfish!! I;m not convinced about the 5 part at all, but would like 2.
I know they are particularly messy, any advice?

Answers:
i have a 10 gallon tank with 2 goldfish myself. i do a 30-40% water change everyweek. as i change the water i also clean the filter with my old tank water. i don't have gravel but when you do the water changes it's important that you vacuum the gravel or bottom of the tank with a siphon hose as this will clean up a lot of uneaten food and fish waste.

i would clean them out every otherday
Clean the gravel with a syphon every 3 days taking 25% of the water out. And those goldfish will not reach there full potentential size if kept in there all there life, Maybe 4 months if your luck when goldfish can live to 15 years, And SHOULD.

Good luck

that is way to much.

you will need to clean it everyweek.

use a spyhon to get under the gravel and get all that dirty.

you will need to clean everyweek regaurdless of the filter, as you have goldfish.
Try using a rock vaccuum. I really like it and you only have to vaccuum the rocks and refill the water that was lost. Goldfish are pretty hearty and do alot of rock cleaning on their own. As far as keeping the water clean, the norm is a 20% water change every week or so. Hope this helps.
Most of the waste ends up in the gravel at the bottom of the tank so even though your filter will clean the water to a certain extent, when you disturb the gravel you will see if it needs cleaning. Magnetic algae cleaners are great for cleaning the glass.
I clean my tank every weekend, syphoning gravel and adding products during water change. Thats pretty much the best way. :] good luck
If your goldies are teeny, teeny, teeny, they'll be okay for a while. Goldfish require a minimum of 38 liters of water per one fish, and that is for a fancy goldfish under 4 inches in length. Once goldfish reach 4 inches in length, they need at least around 50 liters of water per fish and once they reach a few inches past that, they require 76 liters per fish. The slim-bodied goldfish can require more water than that as they can reach 2 feet in length if they are well taken care of, which we all hope to do. Also, goldfish require much higher filtration than any other fish, so I'm sure your filter is insufficient for the fishes' needs. You need to make sure to rinse the filter with every cleaning in the old water removed from the tank, not in clean tap water, but only replace the filter with a new one about once a month.

Because you have double the amount of goldfish as you should, you need to clean your tank every 2-3 days, removing 25% of the water and siphoning the substrate to remove all poop and uneaten food, which you need to make a very concerted effort to remove after each feeding anyway. Also, get a master test kit that tests for ammonia, nitrites and nitrates and test often. This will ensure that you always know the quality of your water. Good luck and think about getting a 78 liter tank for your fishies!
use a container and take out half the water in the tank and then refill it.
They advise you do a quarter to half a water change fortnightly. So you would be removing anything up to 17 and a half litres of water once every two weeks personally I do a quarter water change evey week on the same day. That would be 8.75 litres in your case. Around 9 litre jugs full. Then in a clean container measure 9 litres add a water conditioner like tap safe that removes chlorine and other heavy metals from our tap water. Leave the water to gain room temperature then add it to the aquarium. Job done! I'm not sure how an elite filter works but be sure to follow the advice on replacing the filter media to make sure of the optium filtration. Goldfish are more messy than tropical as what goes in also comes out so don't over feed I feed mine once a day and frozen blood worm once a week. Also make sure you had a good pump lots of bubbles is good no bubbles isn't very nice. You could also get a gravel cleaner to clean the stones when they look grubby so the waste don't remain trapped and create a unhealthy environment.
they are messy and will proabably keep eating til they die or explode
so 10- 20 percent water change a week determining on tank size and level of ammonia and nitrates if any
try to feed them every two or three days
and use common sense on feeding just cuase it looks like it wants more food dosent mean its good for its health
and thats about it and keep an open eye for illnesses
I've got a biorb and they're great I've got two 2 goldfish who are still alive after 5 years! All you do is clean it out every 4-8 weeks depending on how many fish you've got and how big they are, take out 10 litres of water but 10 litre's back in, change the filter and vola all done for another 4-8 weeks
