50 gallon...ok how about a live planted tank.if i could put in fish that were really great...hmmm ever seen a school of about 40 cardinals? Then add some kerri tetra's and throw in a few discus and blue long fin rams. Heck try some cockatoides (not sure of the spelling).and you have a tank that people will be so jealous.
Your best bet is to go to your local pet store that deals with aquariums and fish and tell them what you want.
Yes.
I have some really pretty Red & Boesami Rainbows and they only get about 3 to 6 inches. I also have a few gouramis, they are pretty and also get about 3 to 6 inches. I'm really not sure about how to breed and maintain them. But I do like that they aren't reproducing like my guppies were, lol.
To mix it up a bit I added a Violet Goby and he is so cool looking. I think they get about 12 inches in length, but are peaceful and get along with the others. I like watching them dig into the small size gravel and hide. He is always waiting for me at meal time, front and center. They do require a lightly salted or brackish tank. My husband takes care of it, but I know we use regular aquarium salt.
I also have a couple of Albino Cories and they are also peaceful.
My husbands tank is also a 55 gal tank and a lot like mine but he has Albino Weather Loaches, aka DoJo Loaches, in place of the cory cats.
If you want to stay with the smaller fish; you could put mollies, guppies, an eel (yes they do have small eels, they will eat blood worms) swordtails, catfish, sucker fish, tetras (neons, bleeding hearts, etc.), loaches, hatchet fish, etc. The possibilities are endless.
There are three different levels for fish. There are top feeders, middle feeders, and bottom feeders. Top feeders have a mouth that faces up. Middle feeders have mouths that face forward. Bottom feeders have mouths that face down.
Keep in mind that depending on the size of the fish, you can put 1 to 2 fish per 1 gallon of water. 1 fish per gallon is better. You'll want plants and other decorations that cover all three levels. Maybe put a make-shift cave in the tank. Put some live plants in the tank. Live plants are a great addition: They help with the oxygen in the tank, provide some food for some of the fish, and some plants are used by fish to lay their eggs in.
