Question:My aunt has a fiddler crab in a 5 gallon tank with a blue lobster and she has a rock in their and has a hang-on-back filter and when she came home her crab was walking around in the top part of the filter so does she have to move her rock so he can't climb into the filter or can they swim and she has to do something else?
Answers:
Fiddler crabs will drown if they can't get out of the water. Your aunt needs to lower the water in the tank and provide something for the crab to climb onto. Wholesalers use styrofoam. It is cheap and easliy replaceable. The crab will drown or die trying to escape without something floating. Ideally they would need sand to burrow. She is probably better off taking it back to the store.
First of all Crabs dont swim. They crawl. And yes she has to move her rock so its not so high by the filter. Maybe lay it on the side. And they need land too! unless they die...
Good luck~~!!
Their setup should allow them to get out of water. They like to burrow in the sand so most of their housing should be setup with sand.
