well...I don't think you can have them as a pet, dinner maybe, but not a pet, and it would take decades for it to make a pearl

Oysters are usually found at the ocean.
I never heard anyone having one as pet. I'm unsure as to the ability to maintain its survival.
A good pet? I don't believe there will be much interaction except maintainence and care.
Honestly, your best bet would be buy pearls.
you need to purchase your oyster from a pearl breeder in an asian country. domestic oyster rarely if ever produce oyster pearls, as for being a pet it will be very costly to set-up and maintain a salt water habitate, you would vertually need to rent a section of ocean floor bed from the government in a year round warm climate area such as the gulf of mexico. hope this helps you b4 you start spending money.
any mollusk with a shell can make a pearl i believe and the pearl will grow roughly 1-2mm per year. Not sure where you can get a oyster but i have seen them in sanfransico where you can pick out an oyster to harvest the pearl from. Maye they will cut you a deal on just buying the live oyster. If you wanted to try you can get a giant clam of some sort i have 2 right now but never thought of harvesting pearls from them. I do know you have to seed the mollusk with some shell or sand to get it to produce a pearl though. try getting a maxima giant clam and see if it works.
Additon: i think they are awesome addition to a marine tank. they do have specific lighting need and feeding needs. so if you have metal halide lighting and are willing to take the time to make sure the water is kept in pristine condition then they are awesome pets. they are filter feeders so you should have a tank running for 6 months or so befor adding them but they come in amazing colors and depending on the color depends on the price. They go anywhere from 60 up to 400+ dollars.
Edit: not any mollusk but a mollusk like a clam basically a bivalve not a snail.
