Question:I have a very large and beautiful swordtail. Last night my husband noticed that his tail was gone.We have not noticed any of the other fish eating at his tail. His scales also look like they are coming away from his body some.He was so pretty and big,about 5 inches long.What is going on with him and are the other fish in danger?
Answers:
I would suggest that you have a bacteria infection on the fish that has both damaged his tail like fin rot, but also gotten onto his body and is damaging his skin causing the scales to lift just a bit. If this is the case, you will need to treat the entire tank to prevent it from spreading to the other fish.
A good antibiotic like Maracyn or Maracyn TC should take care of the problem. Just treat as directed on the box , but treat for 10 days.
The other possibility is that you have a protozoan infestation in the tank. It would look much like a bacterial problem and it may be impossible to tell to two apart without samples in a lab.
To treat protozoans I would suggest Maracide or a similar parasite / protozoan medication.
You can treat for both at the same time if you wish by using the two above medications together. They will worth well together and not interfere with each other in the water.

The scales sticking out is a sign of dropsy, Most fish that have dropsy do not recover so the chances are that he will die, I would seprate him and put him in your hosptital tank,
The other fish may have injured him, and cause him to lose his sword tail. I would remove him from the fish tank, as he could be in danger.

Sounds to me like it might early signs of Dropsy. Go to your pet store and get the medication that you need. Yes your other fish can get it as well.
depends on what other fish you have in the tank it if it was anouther swordtail male he would do it first of
