Can a auarium heater be keep underwater with the cord getting wet.?

Question:I just got a Whisper Heater by Tetra and was wondering if its ok to put it underwater completely. It says it doesn't need to be adjusted and will keep the tank at a certain temp. A red light is suppose to come on when heating, but since i got it, it hasn't. I just have the top part cap of the heater where the cord shows above the water and was wondering if thats the problem.

There are different types of heaters, some of which can be put underwater, others which can't. See if the packaging says if yours is "completely submersible". If you don't have the packaging, if it's one like this: http://www.fish.com/itemdy00.asp?t1=7104... you can't put the top underwater - it has to hang over the edge of your tank, or it may short.

A heater should warm your water between 76-80o. If it isn't coming on, you water temperature maybe warm enough already. If it isn't, it sounds like your heater isn't working.

Personally, I like the types that are fully submersible, and that have an adjustable temperature - I like the Visitherm models, if you can find these.

that might be the problem because the cord is probably getting wet and short circuiting it happened to me once i have two whisper heaters and one works even though just the top (the adjuster part that you can turn plus or minus) is out of the water so the cord isnt and one time it got water on it and stopped working but i just dried it off the best i could and let it sit out for a few hours untill it dried and then it started working and im not trying to correct you or anything or be a wise *** but it will be an orange light at about the middle of the heater and make sure your looking at the rights side of the filter first check both sides before you think it wont turn on.
It depends on it it's a submersible type or not. Check on the box and see if it's submersible or not. If it is, then some of the cord can get wet, but not a lot.

Most of the non-submersible types screw onto an opening in the tank. Most of the submersible types are rod-shaped and have a temperature adjusting feature on the top.

Most heaters these days are fully submersible. But it should say whether it is or not on the packet. I work in a large pet shop and all our water heaters are underwater, the biggest problem we face is the heater cracking if it isn't in water and someone has forgotten to let it cool for 30/40 mins before taking it out - this could be the problem in your case, with the heater not working. Take it back to the shop you got it from, while the shop may not refund you, they will be able to get in contact with the manufacturer, who may give you a replacement or refund (it could have possibly been a faulty product - since it didnt work from the start, and might not be your fault at all). If you do try and take it back to the shop - play dumb and don't tell them about submersing the cord! Good luck.
When I first bought a heater - I don't know how to use it, and like you, I put my heater completely submersed in water. I find it difficult to adjust the temperature knob in the water. Secondly, I noticed the red indicator light keep turning on...
This indicates that the heater is not working probably..because it should be on and off depending on the actual temperature of the water and the outside environment. I now positioned my heater correctly, and now it's easy to adjust the knob.
Well u should i got a heater by tetra and at the end of the cord it should say completely sumberge under water
check the packaging to see if it's submersable, there should be a little knob at the top of it (where the cord connects) and maybe a little dial of temps. otherwise just adjust it untill it gets about 76*-78*, do you have a thermometer?
pretty dumb ? but i know some people don't
