You should only put them together if you plan on breeding bettas. Otherwise, they will fight, and eventually kill each other.
Female bettas can be kept in small groups in a large (freshwater) tank with other fish, if you like. They form a hierarchy amongst themselves, and the extra space will give them an area where they can get away from the other fish. Males can be kept in large freshwater tanks, also, but definitely not in groups of other male bettas. They do fine alone, but can live with bottom-dwellers (e.g. crabs, plecosthomus and the like).
Generally speaking, if this is your first fish, it's best to keep them alone in a tank of 1 or more gallons. (They make great first fish by the way. They're very resilient.)
Good luck. :)
EDIT: And when I say "large freshwater tank," I mean something around 20gallons, but only holding around 5 small fish (bettas included), with lots of hiding places.
Only if you intend to watch them very closely. Whether they mate or not, the male will tend to attack the female and nip at her fins until she cannot swim anymore.
Absolutely not, unless you are doing it for the purpose of breeding, which by the way is a lot of work and requires a bit of preparation and equipment and such.
NO!! you cant put those fish with any other fish, they will fight and one will end up killing the other. i once had one of those fish and i put a mirror up to the glass and it tried to beat up the glass, no joke!! Just keep it in a seperate tank! oh and try the mirror thing its funny, but dont hold it up for too long!!
yea if u want them to mate. otherwize i dont think it would be a good idea...
NOOO
unless your an experienced breeder and your male is looking for a mate.
the male and female will attack each other endlessly, and that could result in the death of one or both of them.
I don't think you can. Beta's ALWAYS fight with fish. There is this tank that has a little clear wall in the middle of it and you can put to different fish in it. That way if they fight,... they won't hurt each other. Good luck!
First off Betta's do not fight with all fish. But as some said the males and females shouldn't be placed together unless you intend to breed them. You can put a group of females in the same tank. Betta's are aggressive only to their own kind and to fish that have long flowing fins. In order to place each in the same tank you would need a very large tank heavily planted. And then it is not certain how long the male will tolerate the female.
i think you can...
i got one betta fish and then brought in 7 females and put them in a 10 gallon..they are getting along great
as long as the male has a small territory(like decorative log or castle) to call his own and there is planty of room they can get along
if there is a problem keep a separate tank...just in case
