Question:I've had this swordtail for about a month now and always thought it was pregnant and recently has been pretty biggish. It has the gravid spot and looks squarish at the front so im pretty sure she guna pop!
I have a breeding net but is it too late to put her into it?
I do have a breeding tank but it has over babies in it at the moment.
Answers:
I wouldn't move her to a different tank at this point, the stress of water chemistry change could be pretty hard on her and the fry. She's got a lot of stress as it is. If you are wanting to put her in the breeding net, try to gently catch her in the same net before attaching it to the sides of the tank, The should help reduce some of the stress but putting her in now will be stressful either way, just try to minimize the stress.
Also, bear in mind how many fry you already have and how much room you have for them long term. You might be better off just making sure you have hiding places available and letting nature take it's course. Some will survive, others won't. It's sounds cruel now, but can you really safely house hundreds of fish in a few months? Besides, lot's of plants and other hiding places will actually save more fry than you may think.
First asses if she's ready! You can tell if she's gonna pop if she slows down completely, goes to the corner and starts that head wobble surface swim. That lasts for atleast 8 hours for Platys and Swordtails (slowly at first and then more frequently) before the babies are out.
Suggest move her to the breeding tank and use the brreding net in that.
Good luck.
