Question:I bought a Pineapple swordtail quite some time ago that appears to have a ran together mickey mouse by his back end. I didn't think to much of it because it was kind of blurry. But then he mated with my red velvet sword female and she had 19 babies as a result. They are now almost 9 weeks old and quite a few of them have very distinct, definite mickey mouse patterns towards their back end that look exactly like the mickey mouse's on mickey mouse platies. I'm not sure how common this is for swords to have as I have never seen or heard or been able to find anything about swords with mickey mouse patterns just platies having them. I am wondering how common this is?? If anyone has ever seen it before or heard of it happening? If it happens quite a bit and I just have not heard of it or if its somewhat rare. I am aware that swords and platies are in the same genus and do have the ability to breed. But like I said I have never known of swords or crosses with mickey mouses. Wondering how common it is for them to have offspring when swords and platies interbreed also. I have pictures of them too if anyone would like to see them. Any advice or comments would be appreciated..thanks.

BRAVO...First may I say congrats for cross breeding with two different types of swordtails and raising babies. The mickey mouse colouring is something of a mystery and I can only think that a experimental test was attempted by the tropical fish scientists. But your mickey mouse sword could have been an offspring by the mating to a big platy/sword which is a hybrid x to a mickey mouse swordtail. The play/swordtail has a shorter tail extension and has a mixture of colours and sometimes referred as a'Salt & Pepper platy'
i imagine that it would be pretty easy to cross swords with platies. i'm not sure if they could then breed or if they'd be sterile but it can and will happen
its uncommon that this would happen, but entirely possible! dont worry! enjoy the unique fish u have now! =]
Are you sure you have a pineapple swordtail as opposed to a pineapple wag swordtail? The wag swordtail and the micky platies have always seemed to have a similar look to me.
Here's a link of some swordtail pics you can browse through and decide for yourself:

Either way, the genes from a previous breeding sometimes separate in a future generation. You never know what will happen from one brood to the next. Even professional breeders wind up with throw backs on occasion. Other times they get the "happy accidents".
hi you have got sword tails and platys right, same here and mine were both females and some how they mated and i have got babies and they have Micky mouse marks on there tails also its normal for the platys and swords to mate because they are both from the same family, it just means you have a different type of fish than others lol. its no problem i have them too. but mine are only 5 days old. it is prob very common cause hundreds of people buy swords and platys so its normal.
