Google "dog breed selector" and take a whole bunch based on your expectations and desires of qualities in a family dog. Make a note of which breeds keep showing up, then check www.petfinder.com to see if any are in shelters in your area.
Research the breeds that come up a lot - look for local breed clubs, breed pros and cons, et cetera, and make sure you can deal with the worst of it. Honesty is the best policy.
Make sure the rest of your family agrees with your vision of what a family dog will be like and make this decision together. I highly suggest going to the shelter and asking the staff to suggest a good dog for you. Be honest about your situation and expectations. The more you put into your search for the perfect dog, the higher the likelihood that you'll get the perfect family dog out of the deal.
Good luck!
a collie. i think soo
Mixed breed nuetered dogs are great. They have better temperments than purebred dogs and they live longer too.
golden retriever- loyal ,good 4 kids, easy 2 train
Depends on the type of people your family is. My suggestion is go to your local shelter and spend some time with different dogs. Hopefully this will help you find a dog that has the energy level and temperament you're looking for.
l have staffys. they r so good with kids. they r not to big and not to small. they play with my children. my youngest is 16mths old. and she jumps all over them. l wouldnt have anything else
German sheperds and huskies!! Two of the greatests dogs ever!! If you can a find a mix of this breed they are the sweetest dogs ever and very patient!!
Bichon Frise is a good dog!
a Lab. my cousin has 2 Yellow Labs and they are the nicest, sweetest dogs. They are great around little kids.
definitely a boxer for active families. they arent feirce so dont take one look at them and say no! they are the sweetest dogs ever. the only problem with them is they are stubborn so that makes it harder to say go in the house or something like that. and then the great thing ive heard about them but with no other dog is bell training! idk if u can do it with other dogs but wen they need to go to the bathroom they ring a bell and u take em out.
and then theres the typical golden retreiver. idk why they r so popular cuz i dont think theyre that exciting. theyre kinda boring but they are affectionate and like to play games and stuff like fetch. theyre very smart. but the problem with them is they shed ALOT and theyre overbred so if u were to get one i suggest having it crossed with another dog.
if u want a small dog i suggest u get a pappillon. they r very sweet and theyre playful and affectionate.
king charles spanials are also nice. they r the kind of dog u could be throwing a ball to one second and then sitting on the couch with the next. some of them r really quiet though so check with the parents of the dog to see wut theyre like.
yorkies r nice. my grandparents have them and they love to play with all my cousins from age 1-20. theyre playfull and smart but they always run away wen theyre free and they see a squirell or another dog.
i suggest u dont get ur dog from a a petstore becuz theyre not quality dogs and bred for quantity not quality.
not a pomeranian becuz no matter how cute they r they bite until they are old. my sister has a mix bred one and it bit her sooo hard today and not just a playbite.
i hope i helped and that wasnt too long. sry:\
o btw check out this website. there is a quiz that u just put in the information of wut u want ur dog to be like and it gives a good discription of the dog and everything.

sry again!
All dogs are family dogs! :) But the perfect dog for your family depends on what type of dogs you like and what type of family you have. For instance, if you have small children (Under the age of 6) I'd avoid small dogs simply because children that age don't know their own strength and tend to drop things.
If you have an active lifestyle, and you go camping, or down to the lake on weekends or what have you then pick a dog who would enjoy those things like hounds, retrievers or dalmations.
Really you can't go wrong though, every dog out there is perfectly lovable and would make a wonderful addition to your family.
a boxer, their obedient, loyal, great with kids, and very smart.
You should look up the history of some of these dogs posted, see if there were any reported attacks, how many and decide which dog might be able to be safer for your family because no dog is guaranteed not to be hostile but you want to lower the probability.
It depends on the size of your home and yard, and the age of your children. Large dogs need a lot of exercise. In an apartment, a smaller dog would be best. I have a piebald weiner dog that is the sweetest dog in the world, but he does like to bark. If you don't have a lot of spare time, get a short-haired dog. Grooming can get expensive. Do your homework and search the internet for information about the dogs that interest you most. If you have very small children, do not leave them alone with any dog you decide on. All dogs will bite with enough provocation or if accidentally injured.
Shih Tzu
Well, I suggest a girl lab, usually they are calm and they grow up to be very good and trained.. I have a boy choc. lab, and he is just a puppy (1 year) and he needs training; so far. But thats if you want a big dog, for a small dog you sould get a west highland terrier, or a yorkshire terrier.. Those are both very good dogs.
it depends on what kind of family
i have 2 great dogs, a black lab, shes very friendly and my younger brother and sisters love her and paly with her all the time
i also have a puggle, a pug and beagle mixed, this is a great inside dog, kids love them, i love him, no matter how old u are these dogs are awesome
A lot of people here will tell you the breed of dog they have is the best dog for a family, well a lot of them are wrong. You need to research the many different breeds and make an educated decision on what you think is the best breed for you and your families lifesyle. AKC has a web site with descriptions of all recognized breeds of dog. AKC.org You could also read a few books like Encyclopedia of Dog Breeds, or Idiots Guide to Chosing, Buying and Raising a Dog.
If properly trained and embraced as a beloved member of the family, any breed can make a great pet. With that said, some dogs are seen as more “friendly” than others and, as a result, have become extremely popular among families. According to the AKC, the five most popular breeds in the United States are:
Labrador Retrievers are by far America’s most popular dog—more than 140,000 Lab puppies were registered last year with the AKC—and have a reputation for being playful, hardworking and affectionate toward children. The Lab is easily trained and is highly respected for his prowess at many jobs: as a guide dog for the disabled, a search-and-rescue dog, and for narcotics detection.
Golden Retrievers are sporty, easy to train and strong, but their most outstanding trait is character. They are outgoing and devoted companions to people of all ages, happy and trusting. They make great hunting companions, too.
German Shepherd are noble in appearence and character. This breed's courage, steadfast heart, and keen senses have endeared him to families for generations. Active and outdoorsy, German Shepherds are very fond of children and make wonderful companions.
Beagles love being around people and other animals. They are gentle, happy companions who thrive on affection and attention. They are also clever, quick, and, most of all curious. They need plenty of active exercise.
Boxers are high-spirited, playful, curious and energetic. Highly intelligent, eager and quick to learn, but can be stubborn and sneaky. Constantly on the move, bonding very closely with the family. Loyal and affectionate, Boxers are known for the way they get along so well with children. A well brought-up and properly socialized Boxer will also get along with his own kind and other household pets.
You should do your research before you bring any animal into your home. If breed is not an issue you could always adopt a pup from your local pound, shelter or even a rescue. They come spayed or neutered, up to date on vaccinations and you can find all ages, sizes and breeds. As I stated in the beginning any dog can be a good family dog it is a matter of how the are trained and socialized.
lab's are good with kids. golden retreiver's
