He is learning to cope with his blindness. I have a albino Great Dane that is blind and deaf. She is now 4 years old. When I got her, she had been living in a bathtub. She didn't know what grass was, or a breeze. She had to get herself familiar with the house, her feed-bowl, everything.Don't leave breakables out on tables. He must already know the layout of your house. Give him time to figure it out for himself. He will stop running into things. My dog used to run into the cars in the driveway. She learned to walk more with her front paws outstretched, much like a blind person with a cane. Just love him and encourage him. Take away the most dangerous obstacles and he will be fine.
Other Answers:
Get him a seeing eye dog. The best part is, they can communicate easily! (That was a joke by the way.) Why don't you just help him get around a little bit?
Turn on the light...?
Well, you could bumper things so he doesnt hurt himself. Maybe...I dont know.
Go see the vet. Maybe he has cataracts! Put him to sleep if it gets really bad or if the vet can't do anything.
I have a 7 year old Italian Greyhound, and she has also gone blind in one eye in the past year. Based on that experience, just be his eyes as much as you can. Scooter (my dog) still runs into things, falls off the curb, and hates stairs, but she has gotten much better realizing her surroundings, and learns more and more.
Try to keep the lights on when he's in the room. Otherwise, just don't move your furniture around. Dogs can adapt well to losing their sight, but they need to feel comfortable in their environment.
My friend's schnauzer is completely blind. He went crazy when they re-arranged their living room. He just kept running into everything.
Your dog isn't that old for a beagle - you should take him to the vet if you haven't already.
I have a seven year old dog and she's just got a cataract operation done on one eye. She's still blind on the other eye, but she's managing wonderfully now.
Please go see the vet. Maybe it's not too late to restore his vision.
Here's a useful tip. Don't move any furniture in your house. Your dog is probably making a mental map of all the stuff in your house. So if you move something, he'll be confused. When my dog was completely blind, she kept bumping into things too, but after a while, she stayed clear of the sofa and the table.
Try as far as possible to keep the doors of all the rooms open so that he does not run into them. These may seem trivial, but they really help.
Good luck! Let me know how it goes!
my ex mother-in-law had a poodle that went blind, he did fine, their sniffer is the last thing to go on a dog, he'll learn where all your furniture is eventually, just try not to move it around. as far as the dark goes, dont worry so much, because he is going blind. dogs unlike humans adapt very well to disabilites, they dont feel sorry for themselves and as long as your loving and patient with him he'll do fine, trust me! big hug for your sweet dog!
hmmm. . . looks like gs hasn't been here yet. oliver will pull through. all you can do is be there for him.
