Question:My puppy is 8.5 weeks and he's already lifting his leg to pee on things! The corner of the wall, the vacuum, ..the cat :(
haha. What can I do! This is making training really tough!
Answers:
He's a puppy Einstein! I never heard of such a thing- I have a 4 month that still squats--the cat is funny though- he better watch the cat doesn't scratch it "off".
Seriously--ask the vet about that--that is highly unusual and maybe there's something wrong....and you need to crate him when not at home and bring him out hourly to train---a drag, I know, but it's the only way--you're actually training yourself ..good luck
Get him neutered as young as the vet says is okay- my dog was a year old when I adopted him and had him fixed. He now squats 75% of the time and marks 25%- when I got him he NEVER squatted.
Swtlatinkisses04"Neutering has nothing to do with it"? Male dogs mark their territory because they are male and filled with testosterone, remove the testosterone, stop the marking. Worked pretty well for my dog and it was a very ingrained behaviour.
lol he wasted no time maturing!
um....just take him out very often like every 30 min since its still young and reward it when it des go outside. also, if you have a dog door in your door towards the backyard (if you have a backyard) then as you lead her out, or if she's in the middle of peeing in the house, lift her up keeping her low to the ground and put her through the door so you wont have to take her out again once she's trained!
Your dog may already feel like the alpha :)
Crate train and be firm :))
Leg lifting is a learned behaviour, so you will obviously have to train it out of your dog. You should not let him leglift even when he is outside--discourage it with a strong "No!", a squirt bottle, or a firm poke to get his attention (don't hurt him though). You will also want to make sure that there are no dogs in your neighbourhood or household that he is using as an example. If the problem is not getting better, you can try to buy a special absorbent band that fits around the waist so he pees on it instead of your house. Good luck!
he is just marking his territory
Wow - what a precocious little fella. That's pretty young.
You'll probably have to crate train him since he's decided to proclaim his manhood early. That means unless you're in the room with him, he should be crated until he understands that he's not to pee in the house. You might want to try to use puppy pee pads to redirect him. And the most important thing is to REMOVE THE SMELL AND STAINS THAT HE'S MADE ALREADY. Leaving them will interfere with your training, he'll be tempted to return to the old spots and resoil them. Go to the pet store and look thru the pet stains products and find the one that you thinks will be the most effective for your purposes. Nature's Miracle seemed to work okay.
Good luck! And as soon as he's of age, get that dude fixed!
That'll help control that testosterone laden little guy. LOL.
Clean all the areas thoroughly where the puppy has peed or pooped with a lysol spray. There is a spray you can get from the pet store, you spray it in the areas where the dog has gone before. The spray (cant remember the name) is offensive to the dog, may be even a little offensive to you. I the dog is selecting one peticular area to go pee and poo then place newspaper over that area, if the dog goes on that paper then re-inforced that with a "good dog" "good Boy", then gradually over time move the paper a little at a time to where you want the puppy to go. Also give a "good boy" when they go outdoors! The common rule for puppies is to let them outdoors within 10-20 minutes after a meal, puppies dont have the bowel control of an adult dog. And take them for a walk on a leash the earlier the better!
I would just like to say to the person who said "neutering has nothing to do with it",WRONG!Working at an animal hospital I can tell you that 99% of all the dogs that lift thier leg to our counter are intact (not neutered).I clean up after them all day & the owners say "I don't know why he does that", I reply "because he's not neutered"
Get Him neutered. He gets older and he'll he whizzing all over.
