mid sized breed are better off in houses with yards but if u can fit it in your daily sched to walk ur dog i suppose a retriever will be fine. is your mind set on getting a golden retriever? check out jack russel terriers they're cute, playful and as loving as a retriever and smaller in size thus consume less food. personally i like terriers.

Other Answers:
golds easily adapt to any environment. just make sure you are committed to brush its coat all the time so you can get that golden glow.

They make real good dogs, as they use them for guide dogs.
They do shed somewhat. But, you said it would be outside alot. They do need exercise as they do put on weight.
They are my favorite dogs next to Border Collies, which are not good indoor dog at all.
That depends on the "go outside a lot" meaning. Does it mean that there is a permanent outdoor yard that they could go without digging themselves out? I think an apartment would be okay. Just make sure you take him to parks and fenced in areas a lot so he can run around and play off-leash you know? They do get big too so maybe you'd want to go with a smaller breed, such as a chow or mixed breed from a shelter. You never know what you'll find there!
Absolutely. They'll love to chew on your furniture, your walls, your doors. Big animals make big piles and puddles of waste too. Having an 80 pound animal in an apartment is a great idea.
I have two labs. All retrievers are a wonderful choice. What people don't understand is that the walking of the dog is the most important thing you can do to have a happy dog. The walk should be 45 min. Take to a dog park for a run. A yard is great but it becomes like a fishbowl to him. Running up and down the fence, wearing a pathway here and there. If you are ready to commit to the walk, choose any breed. The most informative program is called the dog whisperer on national geografic. I was lazy and took mine for a dog ride in the car. I've changed my evil ways, though.!
