No dogs are 100% hypo allergetic. Don't let a breeder tell you that they are. Poodles produce less pet dander so they aren't as bad as other dogs. I am sure you can get a golden retriever crossed with a poodle (or a mutt) for about $600 because breeders like to make up breeds then rip people off.
No dog is 100% hypo allergenic. Poodles are very close. They arent ugly (and you "dont" have to have them clipped with the pom-poms) They are very smart and very friendly.
There are also a lot of poodle "hybreds" that have become increasingly popular.
Poodles come in many sizes from toy/ teacup all the way to standard (think giants)
They tend to me more hypo allergenic because they have hair rather than fur. So, they do require a goodly amount of grooming. You can have them clipped in several different styles so dont automatically assume they have to have the poms. Those are actually functional, Poodles are water dogs and the poms protect their vital joints and organs from the cold water.
I'd go with a Standard Poodle. Poodles produce less dander, are very smart, and have great personalities.
You can look at any number of single coated breeds like poodles, bedlington terriers, kerry blue terriers and wheaten terriers. Here are some other things that can help reduce allergens:

- the smaller the dog, the less skin surface and hair in general
- bathing frequently can reduce allergens by almost half
- brushing your dog's coat and removing allergens frequently also helps
- dogs can also bring back allergens (running through grassy meadows for example) on their coats so it's best to avoid those areas during high allergy season
- keeping your dog healthy with a good diet high in essential fatty acids can help as well
- keeping on top of any fleas or any skin irritants will reduce your dog's itching and scratching and reduce allergens
- keeping your dog out of your bedroom and definitely off the bed will help
- getting rid of carpeting and putting in hard surface flooring is a good idea for everything from fleas to allergies
- getting rid of drapes and putting in blinds or shutters helps
- removing stuffed toys, excess pillows and other fabrics can help as well

There are many things you can do that will help you live with your allergies and your dog.
