Question:A friend gave us a beautiful doxie and said that the people she got her from said they saw her being dumped from a car. The doxie is very well groomed and well mannered, even housebroke. You can tell she was definitely spoiled. However, her nipples are slightly swollen and there is milk... not a lot at this point. Also, she is loaded with fleas. I'm having trouble believing someone would spend the money to have her groom and nails clipped neatly, spoil her, then dump her. There are no alerts in the area for a lost doxie. Any thoughts?
Answers:
Dachshunds are not a common breed for being dumped or abused, but anything is possible with some people. Sounds like she could be pregnant. That definitely could be a reason someone dumped her...they may not have wanted to deal with puppies if her breeding was accidental. If you want to keep her, get a wellness exam, find out if she is pregnant, and do something about the fleas right away.
If you can't keep her, there are many dachshund rescues in the country. Just do a general search. I easily placed a surrendered dachshund with a rescue earlier this year and he got a home very quickly.
good luck
Take her to the vet and ask for a microchip scan. Most pet owners have their dogs chipped these days. If she is, you will have access to her chip number and the name and contact details of the owner.
that's horrible! if they dumped a dog, they wont ask for it back, though. so keep the dog, be a good citizen!
If you do not choose to keep her, then I would put her in a no kill pet shelter. But I would also check with the local authorities to see if she is reported missing. But do not give her to the pound as they put dogs to sleep after a certain time.
i would put up found signs... it looks like she just gave birth not to long ago... perhaps she was stollen? ask the friend you got her from if you could talk to the people they got her from... that way you could get all the details.
good luck!
Take her to the nearest animal shelter and see if she's chipped, sometimes things aren't always as they appear and that dog may have been unknowingly lost, or stolen and released (It happens).
With animal shelters in every city, I can't imagine some one just tossing a dog out in this day and age.
Edit: Also considering you got the story from a friend of a friend, it's possible that some of the details got blurred or forgotten.
One of two things could have happened. One she was well cared for because they where trying to bread her, and as soon as she had puppies they sold them off and try to sell her to but the pet store or who ever didn't buy her so they dumped her. Then there is the possibility that she jumped into a car in a different state (The car that she was dumped off in.) and traveled here with out the people knowing. This is the only two I can think of since there is no one looking for here, or trying to get her back. But other then the fleas she sounds like a good dog.
She may have been dumped because she either had pups or was going to have pups and the people did not want her any more for that reason.
Or she could have gone into hiding while she gave birth and to take care of the pups.
Check with your animal control officer as that is usually the first place they would go to find out if the city/town have picked her up. The officer can only keep a cat or dog about 10 days before putting them to sleep.
she might have been dumped but may not have, who knows, you probably will never know the people you got her from might have said this only to take the blame of the poor thing being covered with fleas away from them but fleas are a minor issue compared to some dogs who have been "dumped",the only thing you can do is to try to find out if she has anyone missing her anywhere, put up signs, take out an add in the local paper, take her to vet see if she has a micro chip implanted(and ask the vet if she may be pregnant or just recently had puppies or might possibly have a mammory problem sometimes swollen nipples and milk lead to ovarian cancer),if trying to find her owners doesn't work and she is a happy healthy little girl then i guess you have yourself a new doggy, enjoy her!
I think it's really great that you got a new dog.
I think if the animal is in that bad a shape then you shouldn't return it to the last owner as they sound like jerks to me. Enjoy the new member of your family!
Like someone said, get her checked for possible microchip. If she came from your area you can post newspaper ads or fliers at stores.
Please treat her with Kennel Dip for those fleas. It's inexpensive.
Call your local rescue groups and SPCA or Humane Officer to see if they've heard of any lost dogs that aren't posted - or in alert notices.
The swollen nipples with milk may actually tell you why she might have been dumped. People don't bother to spay and neuter a lot of the time and then, if the female gets pregnant by the WRONG male, they either dump the pups or dump her! or dump them ALL.
take her to the vet to get rid of the fleas and to see if she is pregnant or just had puppies. she could have been dumped because she is pregnant and owners did not want to deal with it. in any event, i would keep her cause she needs the loving home you can provide her. good luck.
