Question:Just bought a new girl pom to the family, we already have a boy pom he is around the same age also. At first I thought she was just scared. But she will just sit where you put her, when you walk by her she puts her tail between her legs, cowers her head, almost like you're going to hit her or something. It makes me wonder if she was abused. She is also very quiet. The boy tries to play with her but she growls at him and will attack him if he get too close. Also when you try hold her she stiffens up and acts really scared. What can I do to reassure her she is in good hands and to get the two to get along?
Answers:
one mistake that a lot of people make is to let the scared dog do anything it wants, when the dog is realy craving for a pack leader to guide it. so you should walk her in areas with more people and let her get used to the busy world around her, but dont force her to do anything she doesnt want to do. when shes scared dont pet her and try to reassure her because u will be helping that fear behavior. i suggest reading up on the topic from a dog behavior book
Did you get this dog at a pet store? If you did that might be the problem. Read up on puppymills and ask a behavourist for help.
Puppies at 4 months go through a "scared phase" Why not get Pomeranians for Dummies it is a very helpful source of information.
In 1992, I purchased an abused dog from a puppy mill. She was terrified of me (the woman who sold her to me abused her). I didn't know what to do at first either, but I decided just to talk softly to her and to pet her and play with her and spend lots of time with her. This worked. Within three weeks, she was acting just like any other Rat Terrier mix. She loved to chase squirrels and birds and she loved to walk around the block with me. We had many good times. She passed away in 2003 on
July 28. Her name was Lady. I buried her in one of her favorite places in the yard.
