My dog ate chocolate?

Question:I have a 12lb maltese and she jumped up onto my kitchen chair and onto the kitchen table and managed to open a closed box of chocolate pixies (chocolate, caramel, and nuts). I know chocolate is toxic to dogs. I looked on the box and I'm not sure if the pixies were milk chocolate or dark chocolate; however, it tasted like milk chocolate to me. Is there anything I can do to induce vomiting so I can get some of it out of her system?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Answers:
get the dog to swallow some cotton on a meat chunk this will induce vomiting by pulling it out

as long as it isnt bakers choc youll be fine as long as it was under a pound of choc.
Bye-bye doggy. :) It'll probably be fine.
if u can get her to eat grass dogs use that as a natural laxative. call an animal clinic for advice
i would take her to the vet they could probly give her a laxative or something im sure once the vet fixes everything your dog will be fine, but its really not good for them to eat chocolate
Go to the vet NOW. A 20 lbs dog can handle a hersey kiss but that is ablout it. The caffine will hurt him.
i dont think that will help.my dog eats chocolate all the time and she aint sick. small dogs are affected more i guess.
Wow, I wish I could give you an honest answer. I know that the worse kind of chocolate for dogs is dark chocolate. Just call a local poison controll center, and ask.
Watch her the whole day..

1. if she throws up by her slef really good

2. if she don't by tommrow take her to the vet
How is chocolate toxicity treated?

If you suspect that your pet has eaten chocolate (more than the stray chocolate chip that fell on the floor), call your veterinarian for advice.

The toxicity of theobromine is dose dependent. This means that the size of your pet, the type of chocolate, and quantity of chocolate determine if or how toxic it is for your pet.

There is no specific antidote for theobromine toxicity. Medical treatments are supportive, and may include all or some of the following:

* IV fluids - to prevent dehydration from vomiting, diarrhea, and /or increased urination, and to "flush" the theobromine out of the system.

* Emetics - medications that induce vomiting. Used when the ingestion of chocolate is within four hours. Up to eight hours post chocolate ingestion may be effective.

* Activated charcoal - for ingestion greater than four hours prior to treatment, or for patients that show continued signs of toxicity.

* Anti-seizure medications - for patients having seizures and/or muscle tremors.

* Cardiac medications - for patients exhibiting irregular heart rates or rhythms.

Toxic Levels

White chocolate contains 1 mg per ounce of theobromine. The toxic dose is 200 ounces of white chocolate per pound of body weight. For example 250 pounds of white chocolate will cause signs of nervous system poisoning in a 20-pound dog, 125 pounds in a 10-pound dog.

Milk chocolate contains 60 mg per ounce of theobromine. The toxic dose is one ounce of milk chocolate per pound of body weight. For example one pound of milk chocolate is poisonous to the nervous system of a 20-pound dog; one-half pound in a 10-pound dog. Keep in mind that the average chocolate bar contains two to three ounces of milk chocolate. It would take two to three candy bars to produce toxicity in a 10-pound dog.

Semisweet chocolate contains 150mg per ounce of chocolate. The toxic dose is 0.3 ounces of semisweet chocolate per pound of body weight. One-third of a pound of sweet chocolate is toxic to a 20-pound dog; 1/6 of pound for a 10-pound dog.

Baking chocolate contains 450 mg per ounce of theobromine. The toxic dose is 0.1 ounces of baking chocolate per pound of body weight. Two one-ounce squares of bakers chocolate is toxic to a 20-pound dog; one ounce for a 10-pound dog.
Call your vet immediately. Chocolate is not toxic to ALL dogs and toxicity also depends on the size of the dog and how much it ate. You need a vet to tell you whether you need to bring in your dog for professional help.

Good luck.
It all depends on the dog. My friend had a poodle who ate chocolate quite often and never had problems, I had a labrador who ate chocolate and just vomited it back up. If your dog shows signs of being sick, take him outside. If it gets very bad, such as heavy breathing or he loses the ability to stand, get him to a vet. He will most likely just throw up on his own, so keep him outside for a little while.
well take him to the vet u don't know wat can happen to him
You didn't say how much she ate, but there probably was not enough pure chocolate in it to be toxic. Milk chocolate is mostly milk and emulsifiers and has very little (if any) pure chocolate.
Look on the ingredients list. Expect an upset tummy, though. Extra outside time will be in order tonight, if you get my meaning. Don't induce vomiting. You can do more harm than good.
I would take her to a vet. I don't want to scare you but my dog ate milk chocolate when I was younger and we didn't know. It led to kidney failure and things that weren't fixable she had to be put down.
its a myth.
chocolate doesnt really affect dogs.
I have never known of a dog who has died from eating chocolate. It is just a myth. Some freaked out chocolate lover
made it up cause they wanted all the chocolate for themselves.
My dog always steals the stuff. If I were a dog I would too.
I wouldn't worry too much, milk chocolate has very little of actual chocolate. I have a dog now that ate a bag of dove chocolates and he's fine. you would be better off just watching your dog that inducing it to vomit.
Same thing happened to me a few weeks ago with my 5lb toy poodle. The vet said to give her Hydrogen Peroxide to help induce vomiting and also pepto bismol to help absorb the chemical that is toxic to them. Once your dog has thrown up a few times, starting giving her some pedialyte.
i have a 12 pound pomeranian and she did this same thing once. she ate the halloween size version of a hershey's bar. after talking to my vet.she told me that my dog would have to eat an awful lot of milk chocolate to really start to worry. but you are right the bakers or dark chocolates are higher in concentration and although it still takes a lot to make them sick or get toxic, call your vet to make sure.hope she will be ok.!
My bassett hound once got into some no-nos and I had to induce vomiting on him. It wasn't pretty...but it worked.

Here's what I did:

1. Mix up a solution of dry mustard powder and water. (Mustard that you put on hot dogs won't work)

2. Take a turkey baster and basically force it down the dogs throat.

Vomiting should insue within ten to twenty minutes.

I know this sounds harsh, but it really saved Walter's life. I know that chicken package that he dug out of the garbage can would have caused an intestinal blockage and cause much pain to him.

Best of luck to you and your pup.
well it depends on how much chocolate. if she ate a lot she will get sick and could die without immediate medical attention but im sure she didnt eat a lot. i would take her to a vet to get her checked out immediately, just to be sure and not take chances. i dont know how to make a dog vomit though.
Do not force her to vomit. Chocolate is toxic in very very large portions over a period of time. This one incident at worse will upset her tummy, no more. She will be o.k.
If it's milk chocolate, it's 1 oz per pound of dog before your dog gets poisoned from the chemical in the chocolate.
I have a very spoiled little Pekingese that has to have her one Hersey's Kiss everyday at precisely 12 noon. My Vet, (also my hubby) said milk chocolate in that small amount wouldn't hurt her.
Maybe try feeding your dog bread... that may soak up the poision . also it is not bad if your dog eats just a little choclate.. but could be a little more serious if he ate alot of choclate.... also you might want to give your vet a call if it is very serious...

Best of Luck !!
bring her to the vet they should be able to help!
THATS a MYTH !

IT will be fine if not ,,oh well one less yapping dog in the neighborhood !!
if it was not a lot of chocolate your dog will probley be fine as long as it was under a pound if it was more i would call your vet
