What type of dog is great with children?

Question:My Godson will be 10 next month and I am quite sure he wants a dog that kinda looks "wolfy" as he said it, he is a first time owner and their house is big plus they have a huge backyard, which one of these dogs do you think I should give him:
Alaskan Malamute
German Sheperd Dog
Siberian Husky
Alaskan Husky
Which one do you think would be the best dog for him, we all know I can't give him a wolf-dog hybrid, Please help me out

Wow! The one correct informed answer here got all thumbs down! Cavalier Mom is absolutely right! I would not suggest any of those breeds for a child or a first time dog owner. If you are genuinely concerned for you godson, as I am sure you are, you will do the research before you buy and not take opinions off this site. Talk to reputable breeders of these dogs and find out for yourself. All of these breeds are working animals, who were bred to be independant and have a job. Children often interfere with this instinct, which can make them "crabby".
If it were me, I would go more towards the herding breeds, who were bred to keep the sheep (kids) safe and in the yard. They have great stamina for a child and don't often get "crabby". Shelties are probably the best of these, because they are small, very easy to train, and very loyal and obedient.
Good luck in your search!

Husky or German Shepherd.

Good Luck!
well i have never owned any of those dogs. my next door neighbor has a german sheperd and it is a very obediant friendly dog. and one of my friends has two huskies. And they are both nice too. none of those dogs you listed have a reputation of being mean or take a lot of training. they all have a reputation of being very smart and obediant so i dont really think there is a bad decision here.

good luck.
the best dog with children would be a German Sheperd Dog.

thank-you bye
well i like german sheperds and siberian huskies they are so cute
All those breeds you've listed do not do well with children. All are not good for the first time owner .They are all very aloof, stubborn, and hard headed. Out of all of the them the worst to get would be the German Shepherd and the Malamute. They are a very dominant breed and need to be trained well so that they know that you are the leader of the pack. If I were you I'd pick a different kind of breed for your "Godson"
German Shepherd!
My best friend has one and she is the most loving dog ever.
She has 2 baby sisters (age 1 and 5) and the dog is great with them. Very, very gentle.
When growing up my grandmother had a Siberian husky. She was the best and was extremely calm when I was around her. She seemed to sense her limits. I remember when I was 14, the husky use to let me pick her up to give her hugs. She had the sweetest disposition.
10 years old is very young to own a dog. Please make sure that he is not the only one responsible for feeding, training, and such.

All the dogs you mentioned are high energy dogs. They all need a lot of exercise and training. I would suggest finding a nice lab or golden retriever as they are very easily trained.

Remember that even though a dog for a present is nice, it may also turn out to be a ton of work for everyone in the family.

Good luck.
Well, out of the choices you gave I think either the German Shepard or Siberian Husky would be good with kids. You may also want to consider the Alaskan Klee Kai, which is a smaller version of the Alaskan Husky or a Samoyed.
i like german shepherds they r great with kids. but just make sure that its ok with the parents that ur getting him a dog. sometimes it isnt such a good idea to suprise them too. and also there is no Alaskan HUSKY it is an alaskan Malamute.
being a dedicated dog owner and having sufficient knowledge of many breeds i say for a first time owner and younger kid the shepherd would be best; they are well behaved, train well, and lots of fun for kids to play with. before you get the dog i would suggest a shepherd mix from an animal shelter because they are less prone to breed specific health problems. the AKC (American kennel club) can help with any question i havent answered or may come up the website is www.akc.org
Well the first two you named are on the top 10 list of dangerous dogs. And no it's not how you raise it.You need to know what the dog was bred for.Shepards and the Malamute are used in law enforcement because they are aggressive.I had a Rott for years and made a big baby out of it and had to get rid of it because it snapped.Collies are excellent with kids, but I would choose the Alaskan Husky out of your four.
German Shepperd's are great with children start with a pup so they can bond and as it grows the bond will strengthen and they will become inseparable,German Shepard's are very protective and loving dogs it would be my recommendation
That's sweet of you...

None of those are that much of a "family" dig...they can be but alot have behavioral problems and take alot of training but of those I would say the Shepherd and of all of them the last one I would get for him is the Malamute.they can be good but they need ALOT of training to get past there "wolf" side...

Hope that helps!..:)
I don't know where Cav Mom works with dogs, but I'd never let them near one of mine. Geez. GSDs are very trainable, and intelligent, etc. A female, or fixed male would be tractable, and not so much into dominance, same with the other breeds. A friend bred malamutes in my childhood, they weren't mean, either. Another had a siberian husky that I adored, full male, raised by a single mother, etc. Bad dogs indeed! And CLAIMS to be a trainer for ten years? Bunk, is what I believe that to be, seriously. Call a local breeder that a friend refers you to, you know, a good one. Ask them for input. And a responsible 10 yr. old boy capable of caring for a dog? Totally in the realm of possibility, folks, back off this questioner, I was fully responsible for the care of rabbits, a heifer, a colt, six cats or more at various times, and the family dog. At eight or nine this began. Nobody went thirsty or hungry, I stank like my animals from end of school until my pre-bed shower, and had no problem with this fact. If kids were taught to care for pets well while young, maybe less kids would be abused, as we'd have a more compassionate and caring new batch of adults coming up soon. Hm?
Get him German Shepherd! They are very loyal, loving and smart I have 2 of them, I also have 2 wolf hybrids.

P.S.
What they say about wolf hybrids being crazy, untrainable, not good around children is so untrue. I've had 11 of them in my life. I say that it all depends on what they're crossed with. (mine are half GSD) Like if it was half pit bull, then that would be the part to make it crazy, not the wolf part.
You should check this lady's site, she has videos of wolf hybrid puppies that she sells.

My friend has a German Sheperd and she has a little sisters that are 1yr, 4yr, and 10yr And a brother that is 6yrs and it is really great with them! I've never had experience with the other dogs you suggested though!
I actually feel none on these dogs are good first time owners, I would suggest going to a shelter or a rescue group and let him pick out his own dog, so that he feels like he has done something good. He may even like a mix breed, that looks like a wolf, plus there will be all different types to choose from. These dogs need rescuing and that would help a dog, plus this will teach him to about all of the homeless dogs that need help.

Crystal
Collie's are AWSOME with kids
I would go for a golden, beagle, bichon.
I wouldn't choose any from the above group you mentioned.
