Question:She is a 4 month old Leonberger (giant breed dog). We feed her Innova which is probably the highest standard dog food out there. She gets tons of attention, and play around here. I have tried the pills called "Deter" and getting no results. Anyone have luck with any other methods?
Answers:
The only remedy is to keep it picked up before she can get it. She learned this from her mother, so it will never seem wrong to her. Mom kept the nest clean, by eating all puppies' feces.
As mom got tired, and pups got older, they were Mommy's little helpers, and kept thier own area clean.
This goes back to her wild dog heritage, when the den was kept clean to keep predators from finding the den.
When she learns she can trust you to pick it up so she won't have to, she will relax about eating it right away.
Funny as it seems, the dogs that eat it are the easiest to house train, as they are more fastidious.
I'm sure she would use a glove and a bag if she was able.
Other Answers:
clean up your dog's feces.
Is she eating her food often? Are you feeding her enough?
Watch over her for a while after she goes to the bathroom and immediately clean up. She may be eating it because she's hungry.
Dogs usually eat their own feces for a few different reasons.
Be it boredom, stress, or anything else, the best way to prevent the problem is to keep yards and kennels free of feces. You can also make the poop taste bad, by adding chili powder or hot sauce to the feces itself, so it will slowly train your dog to hate it's own poop. :)
Also, there is a product called Dis-taste that makes their poop taste bad also.
Giving your dog a lot of toys and distractions would keep her occupied and distracted from eating her feces.
Hope that helps!
Unfortunately, this is a gross, but, normal thing. I have a dog, and sometimes I will catch him doing the same. I scold him. I say NO very loud, while making eye contact with him. And, when he walks away from this, I reward him with his favorite treat. This has REALLY helped me.
I have a three year old Chihuahua and he has the exact same problem - I have tried so many things but to no avail - he has done this since he was a puppy. I have tried all the pills and potions and picking up of poop suggestions.Scolding him when he did it and running round the garden like some lunatic pooper scooper only made oscar more secretive about going to the loo - he started hiding behind bushes and the garden shed when he needed to poop then just so I wouldn't run over and pick it up.
A breeder once suggested putting Brewers Yeast on his food as that had worked for her dogs, but my dog is on a dry food diet, and he just turned his nose up at the food when i did that.
The only thing that seems to work for him is if I try to distract him immediately after he has pooped - talk about bells and whistles and fanfare - I stand there whooping and whistling and waving around his favourite toy to get his attention - I'd say it gets his attention about 90% of the time and he will run over to see what the hell is my problem, and then get distracted by wanting to play with his toy - while I am distracting him my partner runs over with a little baggie and disposes of the offending turd! It is a constant battle to be honest with you!
Sorry I can't be of more help, but I know exactly what you are going through - I have nearly regurgitated many a nice dinner because of turning around just in time to see my beautiful little pup chowing down on a log half the size of his body! It is more than gross!
