All breeds were originally bred for a purpose to help people - to herd sheep or cattle, help hunters flush and retrieve game, protect property or pull carts. Some have translated to other uses - German shepherds make excellent police dogs, golden retrievers are wonderful guide dogs for the blind and so on.
there are trained dogs for the blind, deaf, and physical problems. Dogs help the police to find drugs, missing persons, and they still use them in the army and marines.
some dogs are better then others...but what you are asking is another thing,people train dogs to do a lot of stuff, but the point is dalmations just look good to be fire dogs.
Actually it really is a stereotypical label put on the Breed of Dogs. Hollywood during the younger years often took a dog and placed them in a situation and the Public in general accepted their role.

Most large breed dogs were originally bred to be either hunting or working dogs. Many years ago, people could not afford to keep pets unless those pets could contribute in some way.
Rottweilers were originally used to pull carts and guard cattle.
Standard Poodles were originally water-fowl retrievers.
German Shepherds are very versatile and can perform a variety of jobs including herding, police work, guide dog, etc.
Actually, Dalmatians were not bred for any specific purpose. They were used for many things but their main job was to run along side carriages. This was both for looks and to guard the carriage horses. Their usefulness declined when automobiles came around; but they were still used with horse-drawn fire carts. That's how they came to be associated with firemen.
Pitbulls are used for fighting. They help entertain sick f_cks like Mike Vick.
