Answers:
i have a german sheppard and he is very gentle with my 2 and 4 year old siblings. he is shorthaired but is pretty big. If you want and outside\inside dog, that is gentle, intelligent, and quiet, get a collie. they have long hair though. Border collies are black and white, shorthaired, outside and inside dogs, and if you get it young, like all dogs, it will love the children. they are also about one to one and a half feet off the ground. so they are not too big. i don't know how much they bark, but all dogs bark. one tip: DO NOT GET A DALAMATION NO MATTER WHAT ANYONE TELLS YOU. children have been attacked and killed due to some mutation in the dalamations' brain.

A stuffed toy.

Dogs are NOT for you. Get a goldfish instead.
A ghost?
labrador....
I agree.. Dogs are NOT NOT for you.
Dogs have been bred to be domesticated and companion animals. I don't think a dog would be the right animal for you.
I was going to say Great Dane. EXCEPT they SHOULD be indoor dogs as they do not do well with extremes outside and they potentially have health problems earlier in life than others. Oh well. Good luck with your search!
Try an australian shepherd. They may not be to good with kids or they might be. Dpends on how you raise it. Also, outside dog that will need to be trained and needs lots of attention. A dog might not be the best thing for you if you can't give it TONS of attention. A hamster might be cool to though.
a big stuffed dog!
no dog should live outside.
dogs have to be trained not to bit and yap all the time.
Every kid cannot resist a Pomeranian. They're small, easy to love, and loads of fun.
go to animal shelter and find a nice mutt that you can TRAIN not to bark and build a fence if you want a out door dog
A boxer is wonderful but mine shed like crazy. I have had a few of the greatest dogs and each was a shelter puppy and each was a shepherd/??? mix. They were gentle, smart and very healthy and easy to train. You are looking for an outside dog without long hair, so I hope you live in a warm area.Try the local shelter and speak with the staff about your needs. If they don't have a dog that suits you, they can call you when they do.
Good luck (and think about letting the pooch into the house)
Every dog is different.
they all have personalities, like humans do...
look around the pet shop, or the humane society.
MUTTS ARE THE BEST DOGS!
Go to your local pound or SPCA and pick out what you want. They come in all shapes and sizes, and they all need homes.
You clearly are not a dog person are you?
What you need is a cat!
a lab, except they are better inside dogs, but they can live outside too. If you don't mind having an inside dog, and you live in oregon, washington, colorado, california, montana, nevada, idaho, or utah, then condsider getting a career-changed or retired guide dog from Guide Dogs for the Blind.
A CAT
The Alsatian or German Shepard is a good choice. It does
not bark overmuch, is loyal, smart and can be gotten in a small size . It responds well to obedience training.
Any dog could be bad with kids, any dog could bite someone, any dog barks and any dog could have health problems. It depends on how you raise the dog. You are looking for something that is going to take a lot of hard work on your part. and there is no sure way of predicting if it would ever get sick. So I agree that a dog is not the best choice for you unless you are prepared for a lot of work.
What is the best dog? Well mine are. Oh my bichon has such a lovely coat that I love to groom her. Remmy bites me on the nose and it is just so cute. Zoe dislikes most kids as much as I do. And all three let me know when to mail is here and love to sing with me. HOOOOOWWWLLLLL :)

Okay I don't hate kids, I was just trying to make the point that what if the best dog for me is not the best dog for everyone.

Biting, yapping are training issues. YOU have to make sure that you don't have a problem with those issues by TRAINING. Training classes cost money. And with kids they are important.

Now there are people all over the place that have dogs with kids under 5. I just don't think it is a good idea. You have to train your kid to be nice to the dog and most kids are not ready for that training before hand. Oh yes, YOU again, have to TRAIN you kids to be nice to the dog. So the number of kids you have under the age of 5 makes a big different also. Kids take an amazing amount of time to raise, and so does a dog. So that is something else to keep in mind.

But you know your kids and you household. If and when you are ready for a dog. Check out this dog selector http://animal.discovery.com/breedselecto... on animal planet. By asking about about 10 questions the will help you find the perfect dog for your growing family.

Also remember that really small dogs and really big dogs are not good with small children. Children are likely to hurt a small dog and large dogs, no matter how sweet can knock down kids, or scare kids with big kisses.

Oh I just saw you don't want a dog in the house. Don't get a dog. They are social pack aniamls. They are a part of the family, not a lawn ornament.

Go to your local garden center and get a statue.

SOME dogs can live outside. . . just becuse it is a dog does not mean it is all set up to handle outdoor live. We have done a lot of selective breeding since we first invited wolves to join us. Our domestic dogs do not come from coyotes, but wolves. A pack animal and yes, you can get a dog and stick it outside and it will survive. . . . it will be "fine" but is it happy? Does it get the socail connection that indoor dogs do? They are pack animals, they don't like to live a lone and why do you want a dog that just lives outside anyway. Just to say you have one? They still require grooming and training, just because it is outside does not mean that you can just leave it.

Oh and labs bite. The only dog I have have really been bitten by was a lab. All dogs can bite. It is training that keeps them from biting.
Black Labradors are wonderful dogs. Very friendly, smart, don't bark alot, great with kids, short haired, won't bite people ( except playfully as a puppy) they do get rather big though. Most small dogs yap alot and are meant to be indoors. I wouldn't worry about a black lab being outdoors at all as a matter of fact I think that is where they would be the happiest. Just make sure you have a big dog house where he can get in out of the elements and in the winter he can stay warm. Other great kid dogs are yellow and chocolate labs, golden retrievers, boxers and I don't know what else. I have had a black lab and a golden retriever and they are both so loyal and lovable and would be great with kids. I've almost talked myself into getting another one while writing this. Good Luck choosing!
How about a hamster?
