Question:After a dog whelps how long should you find old blood? She had pups on Monday so they are 2 days old. She is having some mucous like dark colored blood passing. I think it is ok, as long as it isn't bright red. But I thought I would ask. She is a lab, 6 yrs old, first litter.

This is quite normal. She will have a rather mucky discharge for about ten days after she has whelped. She would probably appreciate a sponge down around that area now to keep her from getting smelly and matted. I always wash my females daily after they have whelped.. Just make sure she is nice and dry before returning to her pups
Give her plenty to eat while she is feeding her puppies and make sure she has plenty of water to drink. This helps with her milk production. Don't give her or the puppies cow's milk as this will cause diarrhoea.
You need to take her to the vet they usually dont bleed afterwards
I wouldn't be alarmed because like you said it's dark colored meaning that's it's old dried blood or even tissue passing through. I think I would compare it to as the same as a female during after menstruation passing old tissue at the end of their cycle.

if its dark blood, its nothing to worry about. there was probably alot stuck in there. its just coming out slowly.
She should be fine but when mom and pups go to the vet, ask them about. I can't say for dogs but humans show spotting like this and it usually isn't a problem. I would only be concerned if there was a large amount of blood, fresh blood, puss or if there are other symptoms. You should call your vet to be sure though.
