Question:I have a rescue Lab and we were told that he should only give him pedigree dog food due to a digestive problem. When we go out and he goes its fine then hell run around some then stops and keeps on straining to go again with nothing coming out. He keeps doing this the whole time were out. But after a few attempts he oozes a browny mucus like gel from his bottom. Can anyone advise is this serious. Ive lloked it up and there are similar things in humans where you feel like you need to go its either IBS or Collitis. Please can someone help. Its taking the enjoyment away from him. Hes a lovely animal.
Answers:
if he has a digestive problem pedigree dog food is NOT the answer. It's not total crap, but it does contain most of the things dogs have digestive problems with. Call the rescue and ask WHAT the digestive problem was...they should have records. Then ask your vet for a food that will help him out. The straining could either be a result of anal glands (swelling or full glands can make the dog feel like it needs to go) or a fiber problem. Be aware that with dogs fiber problems can be a result of too much , too little, or the wrong kind, so be patient if you need to try several foods.
He is spraying his out of his anal glands. They may need to be emptied or he might have an infection.
I would take him to the vet and most definitely take him off of Pedigree. It's not a quality food. My dog was on that from the rescue place and she had the most awful gas problems. I've found that many vets don't know much about pet nutrition. If your vet recommends a grocery store brand, I would go talk to someone at a holistic pet food store. They can offer a wealth of information about dog nutrition and ailments and can probably steer you in a direction that will help alleviate at least some of your dogs digestive problems.
I recommend this webstie to help you choose a quality dog food

I know it's gross but dogs have little anal glands inside there anus and they contain a gross little liquid that oozes out when thewy are raelly scared. Sometimes they get infected and need to be emptied but some vets say they should not be emptied. I would take him/her to the vet and ask about the anal glands...
Pedigree is junk food.If he has sensitive belly go to Pet supply store and ask for Nutro for sensitive stomach. It is chicken and oatmeal based food.Much better than pedigree.
Very nice of you to rescue this fur baby.
Push yourself away from the computer and
TAKE THE DOG TO THE VET!
Ask your vet about his diet and explain how long this has been going on. Have you been feeding him any new types of treats or people food? That happens to my dog once and a while though it's usually a result of the factors mentioned and it goes away after only about a day...
Hope your dog feels better...
