Any tips on housebreaking my 8 month old chihuahua?

Answers:
yes. if it sleeps indoors, which chi's dont like to sleep outside, have a little "traveling cage" i dont know what its called, and only let him/her sleep in there at night. when you wake up to let him/her out, take it outside so it can go,. and dont let her in until she is done with her business. doing this as a routine will help her to understand that she is to wait until you take her outside to go. and you will not get accidents at night when you are not looking cause she is in the cage. and like the other lady said, dont leave out water for the last couple of hours of the night so she doenst feel the need to go to the bathroom, and walks are also important hope this helps.

if u notice that it has to go bright it to the place where u want to go and leave it tehre till it goes. place something that will attract it to go there
Pateince helps a lot!! :-)

Consistency. Take the puppy out every hour for the first several weeks. Only put down food twice a day, do not allow them to eat and drink at their leisure and only do it when you have a couple hours immediately afterwards to walk them until they have done their business.

Also, keep in mind that if the dog messes in the house and you find it 3 hours later - it does little good to scold them, they don't know why you're yelling at them. They have very short memories.

I hope that helps, at least a little bit.
i had the same problem with mine! it's like they never learn. So finally since he was small enough I tried to do a litter box training with him, and it worked!. I went to the pet store and got some of the spray that you can spray that trains a dog where he CAN go to the bathroom and sprayed that in a litterbox and every time I caught him (the hardest part) going to the bathroom somewhere else I would take him to the spot and tell him in a firm voice NO and place him in his litter box.
#1 rule - Patience.

Some dogs will take a full year to be fully house broken.

Lots of methods to use, but crate training is a favorite. The crate is used as the dog's private space, their den and their home within the home. To crate train you must provide a crate that is small and doesn't allow the dog lots of space to spread out. The concept is the dog should be able to stand up, turn around completely and lay down. No excess space. Dogs will not mess in their den. If the crate is too big, they'll just mess in one corner and lay in the other.

You have to get a routine down with the dog. Wake up in the morning, take them out of the crate 1st thing and immediately take them outside. Use a command like, "Do your business" or "Go potty" and praise them like CRAZY when they do it.

In the evenings, the dog must go back into the crate. If you're not home, they're in the crate. Make it a habit that you religiously take the out and immediately go outside to "Go Potty". If you have to shower, or are busy and can't keep an eye on your dog, put him/her back in the crate.

It's not abusive, it's their home within the home. Most dogs become attached to their crate.

Good Luck! Don't forget rule #1!
A puppy that young will need frequent bathroom breaks. You can start by taking it outside first thing every morning and right before you go to bed and several times in between. When the puppy goes in the house, disipline them right away. If you wait more than 10 mins, they will forget what they did and not understand why they are in trouble. Make sure you only leave food out when you feed them and don't allow them to access the food all day. That way, ten minutes after eating or drinking you can take them outside because thats about how long it takes for them to have to go. When your puppy does go outside, praise them and reward them.
put some a little poo on a newspaper put another one on that
when the dog smell poo it will poo
slowly move the paper outide
Whenever the dog is in the house and not crated put a body harness and leash on the dog, tie end of leash to your belt. Wherever you go the dog goes. When you see the dog start to signal (sniff/circle/scratch) that it's got to go than run the dog out to where you want it to go. Praise, reward (immediately) and use a command word consistently. When the dog shows it's learned to go outside consistently by dragging you to the outside than you can undo the leash from your belt. Keep the leash on the dog still and keep an eye on it whenever it is in the house and not crated so if it starts to make an accident you can grab the leash and run it outside. Once it is going outside with no attempted accidents for at least a week than you can take the leash off.

The most common mistake in potty training is giving the dog freedom to roam the house without supervision where the human doesn't see the dog signal it needs to go.

And if your dog is a puppy remember it only has an average hold time of 1 hour for every month of it's life until they reach 8-10 months or so and can hold overnight (usually).
