Question:I see way too much against these dogs, I work at a large dog pound and they have unfortunately put down hundreds of pits, these dogs are always the easiest to handle, and soooo people friendly. I have seen them come in so many colors no other breed can come in, the most unusal was a dog with a creamy tan body with dark red merle and white, also white dogs with brown and cream merle markings. Why would anyone want to ban a breed thats soo colorful and trusting
Answers:
my son has two of them very good dogs raised with children .i too work in animal rescue and shelters everywhere seem to be over full with them but it depends on breeding whether dog is right sometimes unfortunately some of these back yard breeders over breed and they interbreed thus like anything mess with gene pool you get a mess but on other hand stuppid owners make stupid irresponsible dogs .what is making it really bad in owning them now is insurance companies on multihousing units like apartments , trailer parks ans some associations ban the breed from coverage so when owner has to move to one of these places they are usually forced to surrender the dog and thus overcrowded shelters with breeds like pitts and rotts and chows etc . media hype has help feed the breed selection dog frenzy so much for age of information sometimes we get more than we need to know and people are basing their knowlege on popular so called politically correct information i believe there are no stupid dogs . and dangerous well if i own a gun i will not leave it where it can harm someone or shoot someone for sport .same goes with any dog that is protective of owner and puppies you do not as responsible owner put that dog in the loaded gun position you treat it with responsible and diligent care and love sorry about soap box but every attack i ahve heard about dog was exposed to child not used to children hell some small ankle biter breeds hate kids but you do not see them breed selected as dangerous and roaming dogs due to irresponsible owners . it all boils down to how the owner cares for dog
I love em & alwasy have
ban the deed NOT the breed people
I think they are wonderful and pretty like everyother dog. I just think they re miss represented and unfortuanatly mistreated and trained to be mean, which give them a bad name. There are alot of good pretty pits outthere. It just depends on the breeder of you are going to get a true version of the breed
I love pitbulls, but unfortunately they're misunderstand. With all the dog fights and owners making them aggressive it's terrible.
I think they are wonderful, but unfortunately completely misunderstood.
I think other dogs are prettier, but I have to agree. I was visiting a shelter recently (I rescue cats) and my daughter was with me so of course we had to visit the dogs. There were tons of pits, sadly, and every single one was sweet and friendly, even after being left at a shelter and left along in a concrete and metal cage!
Aggressive pits are the result of irresponsible breeding. Some people do breed for it and it's their fault.
Besides, even in that case, from what I understand, they are bred to be dog-aggressive, not people-aggressive. A person has to be able to step in between the dogs and not get bitten.
Now don't get me wrong. Dog-fighting is sick and wrong. I'm just sharing what I have learned from pit websites.
I think the best thing would be to spay/neuter all pits that show signs of aggression (except possibly in defense of an owner in real danger; plenty of dogs will do that) and only allow the sweet ones to breed. Then over 20 years or so the aggression is bred out. Keep the ones that have been badly bred by irresponsible people under the care of responsible adults with no children or other pets and let them live out their lives.
People are probably scared of this breed because of the pitbulls ability to lock its jaws. Their solution is : get rid of the dog + close your eyes to the problem. for ex. Pits bred for dog fights. : ( This kind of training is animal abuse !!
I think it depends on the dogs breeding. Any breed of dog can be a biter. It also depends on temperment. Good dogs have good natured puppies usually.
heres' some statistics I found :
" Rottweilers were the most commonly reported breed involved in fatal attacks, followed by pit bull-type dogs.” "
Where I live, police say that German Shepherds are the worst ones to bite more so than the Pitbull.
A properly treated dog, who has good temperment is a good dog, no matter what breed : ) I think the Pitbull got a bad reputation.
I don't think I could stand working in an spca. I'd cry everynite over the ones that had to be put down. I agree with you + have heard that some states have banned the dog.
Yeah..but like the others they are completely misunderstood. It angers me to see these dogs behind bars because only a few pits have done bad things, like any other breed. But pits seem to be treated worst. A few pits do bad, the entire breed suffers.
Well, I have to say pitbulls are not a pretty breed, but I like dogs not because of their appearance, but I like their loyalty to humans.
BSL is a truly terrible thing. Pit Bulls are a true American breed. Recently some organization did a study on canine behavior, and pit bulls scored higher than tons breeds, including Golden retrievers, border collies, and cocker spaniels! Punish the deed, not the breed! Fight ineffective breed bans!
Me of course! I have 8, and anyone who doesn't like them doesn't really know them!
A well cared for, properly trained pit bull is one of the happiest creatures on this planet. I've been lucky enough to meet several, and I swear the biggest danger was drowning in slobber from their kisses.
I got bit by a bull mastiff, once. I'd been riding my bicycle, in the road, and it had gotten out of its yard. Awesome animal control officers had him in custody within an hour, and he lived out his quarantine just fine. Then one day, I was out riding my bike again, and there he was, outside his fenced in yard. He was growling and acting agressive again. But I saw him so I got off my bike and put the bike in between me and the dog. Then the next thing I know, there was this other dog, about half the size of the mastiff, placing itself in between me and the mastiff. It was a pit bull. It was a pit bull that I had never seen before, and so friendly to me. Every time the mastiff tried to move around it, the pit bull moved, continuing to protect me, even though it didn't know me.
I don't have a dog right now, but maybe someday I will. My boyfriend and I are agreed, that pit bulls are definitely on the list of possibilities (I love greyhounds, too - so mellow). It makes us both very sad to know that there are all too many people who will abuse and misuse the great dogs that pit bulls are meant to be.
Hi teenytiny.
I love the pitbull breeds, personally. but also it's true...that many of the dogs in this breed seem to have a genetic basis for dog aggression. I don't think that they come out of the womb being dog aggressive, but rather that they have temperament characteristics that tend to make them more dog aggressive. (i.e., dominance and a strong defensive nature). It is an extremely courageous and intelligent guard dog that is very full of vitality. Highly protective of his owners and the owner's property, it will fight an enemy to the death. It is usually very friendly, but has an uncanny ability to know when it needs to protect and when everything is okay.
Yes, sorry, but in real life terms, you can never really take off leash at a park for your dog - not because the dog is dangerous or untrained - but rather because people are so darn afraid of what the media has led them to believe about this breed, that they snatch up their children and run screaming from the park.
This breed can be willful and needs a firm hand, her socialize needed a very thoroughly when young to combat aggressive tendencies. As with any breed, they should not be left alone with unfamiliar children.
