2 New puppies Pekingese & Golden Retriever ! Help !?

Question:Hello,

Our family currently have a 14 week old female pekingese puppy and a 10 week old golden retriever puppy. We just adopted the golden retriever about 4 days ago and had the pekingese since she was 8 weeks old.

They both seam to like each other, other than the pekingese barking and nipping at the golden when they are together. My wife however is very scared about the golden hurting the pekingese. Our golden is about 20-25 lbs and the pekingese about 5 lbs. We called a trainer who told us to let them figure things out and establish the pecking order. She's very scared about the pekingese eyes because they look so fragile. The trainer mentioned that if we keep separating them we are just prolonging the inevitable.

What should we do? are we really at risk of injuring her by letting the 2 of them play.

They are currently playing with each other and the golden is usually minding his own business but the pekingese always tries to steal his toys and stats nipping at him.

Help Please

Let them play - your trainer is right. Dogs seem to scale their play to the size of the other dog. My male golden's best friend growing up was a corgi and he now plays regularly with a 15 lb. shih tzu - and my dog weighs 95 lbs. The shih tzu scratched up my female golden's nose (who weighs 75 lbs) when they were first getting to know each other and work out pack order. Nothing happened to the shih tzu (he actually ended up out-ranking her in pack order and still does) It's not the size of the dog that matters as the old saying goes. They'll be fine.

A Golden is an energetic, rambunctious puppy, but they are very intelligent. The peckingese should be able to protect itself... and will usually end up dominating the Golden... even if the Golden weighs 100 pounds.

Make sure that you trim both pup's claws, but otherwise let them play. The Peek will tell the Golden to backoff if needed, and the Golden will learn to bark and growl, but won't try to hurt the Peek.
i would say not to worry to much i worked in a kennel that we boarder two dogs that lived together the female was a miniature poodle the male was a great dane and they both were young but the poodle was the boss most likely the Pekingese will stay the upper hand but sending you some sites that might help you out.
the Pekingese is nipping and steeling he is just showing that he wants to play listen to the trainer
Peeks are INCREDIBLE yappers! They also have "little dog syndrome," where they take on dogs much bigger than themselves... even when the big dog has no interest in the little one.

It took about 2 weeks from the time we brought Mee Too into the house for her to adjust to the other, much larger, dogs but now they all get along and there was never any actual fighting. They do need to sort out thier own pecking order, however, and this is the case with any animals put together.

I mean... Look at mine. If these guys can get along with each other, as well as the birds and cats in my house, I'm sure there is hope for you.

Yes let them play, but constantly supervised. Your wife is right, pekinese have eyes that can pop out if they are hit the wrong way, your trainer should know that.

The golden retriever is still a puppy and doesn't know it's own strength, the puppies need to play together, but they also need alone time with each of you to be trained. Never leave these two alone together, not until they are older and well trained.

When your peke nips at the golden, please reprimand it, too many times have I seen a small dog bother a larger one, and it's fine with it's family members, but when you get outside around other dogs, who knows how the other dog will react. teach your small dog to leave the other dog alone. I use the "leave it" command.
well, what a mess you have gotten into! Usually it's wise to think about these things aforehand!

Supervise the pups. Don't let the Peke bully the Golden just because it is smaller. You will create a bully
