Question:I have a 6month old maltese x silky terrier, She's by herself for most of the day during the week days, whats a good 2nd dog to get, and is it a good idea to introduce a new dog into her territory?

When I got a 2nd dog 5 mos ago, I was told that the sex didn't matter - e.g. I could get a 2nd female as long as they both weren't alpha dogs. The common advise is to get a 2nd dog that's calmer/less energetic than your #1 dog. I got a male who's very calm and it's worked out great as far as the 2 dogs get along very well together. So, for the dogs, it's great. As for the owner, it is twice the work/cost - don't believe those who say it's no more work. It's getting easier, but trying to get 2 dogs in the car, into the dog park, or paying for the vet bills/food/treats, etc., it is more work & costly. I think it will be harder to find someone to watch two dogs vs. one dog - just those kinds of things. Another alternative might be to find a playmate where you could trade-off leaving them home together, say one day a week; or take your pup to doggy daycare one day a week. The other option already stated is to take her for walks after work or to the dog park, which I think is an excellent suggestion. You may meet someone at the dog park that you can exchange dog care with -- I know I did!
If you want a 2nd dog, I'd say another small dog - maltese mix, shih tzu/mix, havanese or bichon friese or mix of these would be good. Just pick the calmest one of the litter! Good Luck!
Any dog. Think about if you have enough time to take care of 2 dogs. They need daily walks and need to be properly socialized or they will turn into fluffy devils!
