Question:My poor puppy is about 7 years old. He's always loved to play fetch and frisbee, loves to run and jump. Now he's getting older and his one hip has started bothering him. We're already giving him glucosamine. It helps some. Some friends have given their dog in a similar situation tylenol or aspirin with no ill effects. I love this mutt tremendously and it's breaking my heart. He weighs about 55 pounds and his breed is "mutt."
Answers:
Asprin can be given and here's a site with the dosage by weight

An anti inflamatory that I have been researching, and it appears good, is Boswellia. This is herbal and can be given to dogs or people.
The first thing you need to do is tell any of your friends who are giving their dogs Tylenol that they're killing their dog! Don't people talk to vets or use common sense at all any more? Dogs CAN NOT take Tylenol!!
As for your dog, he obviously needs to see the vet. Glucosamine chondroitin is great for arthritis, but only up to a point. At some point in the life of an arthritic dog he needs prescribed anti-inflammatories. If you love your mutt tremendously, why hasn't he been to the vet yet instead of being left in pain?
Glucosamine and condroiden
Have you tried letting him swim or wade in water? This can help him get plenty of energy out and exercise without compromising his poorly hip!
Good luck with him!
Ibuprophen is actually better than tylenol or asprin because it is an anti inflammitory. One a day should help your dog be more active.
WalkingLady is correct. You need to bring your dog into the vets. Ask your vet about Deramaxx. It's a anti inflammatory that works wonderfully with dogs who have arthritis.
NEVER give an animal medicine that has been put on the market for humans.
Start by taking the dog to the vet to get him medicine to ease the joint pain and swelling. If the dog is overweight then he will need to be put on a healthy diet to help him lose weight and this will help to take pressure off of the joint. The dog must also get exercise or the arthritis will get worse very quickly. Keep the dog warm at all times. Cold makes arthritis hurt more than it normally would. The vet might also recommend a food that is specially formulated for joint problems. Ask your vet every question about your dog that you can possibly think of.
Ask your vet about Rymadal, and see if there is any place in your area that does underwater treadmilling for dogs. Exercise is the key but doing it weightless is even better it has done wonders for dogs in the Minneapolis area.
By the way never give a dog Ibuprofen or tylenol only aspirin( according to Petsmart), it can kill a dog. I noticed somebody mentioned it. I can't stress this enough. At my hunting camp a buddy thought he was doing me a favor when I went into town and gave my black lab an ibuprofen because he was limping around. He became violently ill and I didnt know why , so I took him to the emergency vet and they told me he was suffering poisoning from Ibuprofen. It was so close to disaster.
Definetly take your pup to the vet if the arthritis seems to be bothering him and more than likely your vet will perscribe Rimydyl, it's for joint pains and works everytime.
