American Bulldog owners...?

Question:I have been planning on getting an American Bulldog or Boxer for like two years. We're finally moving and we have two young children ages 6 yrs and 1 yr.

Does your American bulldog get along with children? Is he/she protective of his/her environment?

In YOUR opinion, what are the benefits of having this dog? What are the disadvantages.

Answers:
American bulldogs are great pets. But they are VERY strong. But like any dog, it will make a great pet if trained right! And thats not difficult!
I say they are very strong here because with two small children, it will be easy for one to knock the kids down. It's not that they would attack them or anything its just that they might be boisterous so just watch out. But the kids will grow and the dog will learn, so its not worth deciding against your dog of choice just because of this.

Boxers are great gogs too. They can take a while to mature though and are still pups meantally untill about 3 years old! They are smaller than American Bulldogs

Both of these dogs drool a lot! Thats the only disadvantage I can think of. These dogs would be protective, not nearly as much as some other breeds though, and they are not agressive (as with any dog).
They are very fun dogs! I mean they are not serious, like some breeds, such as a Japanese Akita or a Borzoi for example.

**The best advice I can give to you is READ! Read everything you possibly can about both these dogs before you get one! ESPECIALLY if you have never owned a dog before! And read everything you can on these subjects
Dog behaviour
Dog training
Dog nutrition
Dog breeds
Puppys of the breeds in question
Too many people take on a subject they know nothing about!**
I strongly reccomend a holistic food, its the key to a healthy dog.

If you do not do your research you are missing very important info, for example -
You wont know that large breed like an Am Bulldog pup should not exert itself or be allowed up steep things or stairs until it is relativly mature because the developing bones and tendons etc. can be permenantly damaged very easily.

I also urge you to adopt from a rescue centre. They will give you the perfect dog, and in your situation with the kids it might be better to have an adult dog (not as boisterous, sometimes already trained, personality and adult size is known)
You can get pups there too if thats what you want.
They have purebred dogs of every breed, very healthy.
They are much cheaper than from a breeder.
You will be saving a life and getting a companion at the same time if you adopt!

I myself would go for an Am Bulldog, but thats just a personal preference and because they are bigger and not as common as Boxers where I live.

Hope this helps!
Good luck!

The breeder you choise will make the biggest diffrence in both breeds. I raised ch. american bulldogs, they were great but didnt like other breeds?? I havnt talked with the woman in years but if you can find something special kennel or that bloodline they are awsome dogs.
Please take the time to learn the diffrence between a back yard breeder, puppy miller and a reptuable breeder. you can google each of those terms to get info.
www.nextdaypets.com has an awsome check list to help people, i dont recomend buying a dog online no more than i would a spouce, the forum and information are great, bad place to buy a dog.
With these two breeds, you get what you pay for, i fancy both of them, but will probally never own another. Im a Great dane/ german shepard kinda gal..

Mine were great with my kids, they would bark but no one was aggresive but no one dared venture into my yard without permision.

With kids, american bulldogs are less hyper and probally the better choice with such a young child. Like i said, the breeder will make all the diffrence, and dont buy ckc \

If you have children, do not get an American Bulldog, especially with a 1 year old. Ideally, you shouldn't get any dog until both children are above 7 or 8, but if you really want one now, do not get an american bulldog.

Yes, you can raise them to be gentle and kind, but they still have that aggressiveness in them and if they feel threatened (which is so easy with kids) they can attack.

There are also special laws concerning america bulldgos.

Go with a boxer or ENGLISH bulldog
