Question:Is it normal for an 8 week old puppy to already be humping. The other day my friends dog started humping his bed and would not stop. He sometimes showed agression to her boyfriend when he tried to stop him.
Answers:
Yes, all dogs are different, but this puppy is not strange at all.
Humping can be a sexual drive when a male still has his testicles, this puppy I'm sure has a lot of hormones raging. If the puppy is castrated and still humps things, it's dominance. At times even castrated dogs will have the sexual urge if there is a female around in heat. But that is not often.
Humping is a dominate gesture, that is why even females do it. Humping says to the one being humped, I am the boss here. That is why you never let a dog or puppy hump people. A lot of people think it's cute and funny, when the dog is actually saying, I'm your boss.
I wouldn't be too concerned at this point, although they should have him neutered asap, if the behavior then continues, they should then address the issue. It's important to know that it is a normal behavior during play with dogs (sometimes taking turns), but if it's occurring all the time, or with people and/ or items, there is an issue.
A puppy that shows this kind of behavior at a young age means that he was taken away from its mother too soon.
humping is a dominance action
If the pup that young showed aggression then the OWNER should have given 2 quick fingers to the nose - dog needs to know who is Pack Leader and that aggression like that is NOT tolerated
Well, it is possible that puppies will hump because they are being territorial, not because they are horny. He's a little bit too young to be wanting that... :)
If he is already growling at people and showing aggression at this young age, that is a sign of something worse to come. Take him to a puppy socializing class. Also, make sure you have a trainer assess him later on.
I manage a hospital, and when I see a puppy growl at us at that age, to me it automatically means that he will have serious aggression problems when he gets older. We usually see the same dog a year later for something, and it is so mean we have no choice but to sedate him to even look at him. And another important thing.neuter him. He will still be a dog, just without all the unnecessary hormones that will most likely cause him to be even more vicious!
Not really, unless they are going to be very dominate dogs as adults.. You would be wise to get a handle on that while he is young, small and easier to handle.
Don't play aggressive games with him, wrestling, tug of war, etc.. Get yourself a good trainer.. Not a little pet trainer from the dog food store.. A REAL trainer.
Scold him when he does this and it will hopefully stop after he is neutered.
I've had a cat that was around that age and started humping my older MALE cat. BY The way they are both males... Anyway my 4-5 year cat likes to hump the younger one too. But The baby kitten defenetly lost his mother too soon. I think it is completly normal for your 8 month dog to do that.
Hey, when ya got it, use it! Kidding! It's a natural instinct and can start as soon as the hormones kick in. :^)
