Question:Hi! I recently received a gift for my 11 week old Doberman, Chi. It is a relatively large smoked bone (with marrow in it) that came from the butcher (so I know that it's fresh). He's currently teething, and the poor thing has the itchiest teeth! He chews on absolutely everything! I have puppy proofed my room, and given him lots of toys to chew on (including plush, soft stuffed animals), but the only thing that seems to satisfy him are tough things, like the edge of my bed or the bottoms of chairs:[ (I have since covered them). I would really like to give this bone to him, but not if it compromises his health.
Are puppies supposed to chew on real bones?
If no, why not?
Thanks so much! :]

I feed my dog raw, so she eats alot of bones. You have to be careful what kind of bone it is. A beef leg bone for instance is extremely too dense, as are some other kinds of bones. This is why raw fed dogs have a greater chance to crack or break teeth. The bone would be 100% better if it was raw instead of smoked. The other thing to worry about would be cooked chicken bones. Those are no-no's also. They will splinter and could do damage. Raw chicken bones are great nutrition for dogs.
Dogs love bones, but dont give them small skinny bones so they dont choke. A steak bone is good for them. GOOD LUCK!
no... puppies can get upset stomachs or a piece stuck in their throats or intestines. i recommend trying the teething key chains from nylabone... i love them and they are usually too tough for my swissy pups to get through...
I don't give them to my dogs. They are kinda messy & gross & I don't know what kind of illnesses the dogs can get from them.
You can get some awesome Nylabones at Target. They even make them for large dogs - make sure you get the large breed type so that he can't ingest any pieces. These are safe & sanitary & the dogs LOVE them.
Mind you - he may not think they are that cool at first since you've been giving him real meat bones - but he WILL like them after a bit - don't worry!
No dog should chew on bones. You have to be very careful. If the dog brakes the bone and it chips. If they swallow that it could damage their insides, or even possibly kill them.
Also real bones will attract scavengers from bugs and other animals.
Good, raw bones are great!
I'm a vegetarian so I don't like the idea of animals dying for the enjoyment of a dog, much less that of a human. Poor lil cow!
Dogs can have beef and pork bones that are big enough they can't swallow them whole. Those bones are hard and won't splinter. Do not give the dog chicken or turkey bones, though, because those bones shatter when the dog eats them and can pierce his stomach/intestines. They are very sharp. So the bone you have is probably fine for him if it's beef or pork.
i had a answer like that i wanted to know why they do that and yes they are alowd to do that
My vet says REAL bones are a no-no. So did my vet across the state, but I heard my new one telling someone else what my first one told me. Reconstituted bones, made from ground up bone meal, and formed in molds are ok, and are bone without possibility of splinters being swallowed. Small splinters can get stuck in the digestive tract, or scratch it en route to the other end, causing all sorts of not good things. Though the # of instances I've seen, compared to how many dogs I've seen eat bones is quite small, 2 to be exact, I don't give my dogs bones, and I've got two rotties. Rawhide chews, smoked pig ears, and rope chew toys of a sturdy nature, not the dollar store crap, ought to help with his teething. Puppies especially are vulnerable to small splinters due to the sharpness of their teeth, they can break off small chips while gnawing that an older dog's teeth would be too rounded to accomplish.
