Answers:
I have shaved my 13 year old pom for years if the heat is getting to her. Because of her breathing/trach probs I starting doing this about 4 years ago. YES, it grows back and very quickly i might add. now that i live in texas i trim both my poms every couple of weeks to thin out and maintina their heavy coats. the sun here is brutal and both having lived in wisconsin for many years found it extremely hard to be in this lovely heat. so don't worry, coats grow back and everytime it grows back the same! don't worry bout the rumors on that one!
i would also like to add to this answer that MOST, not all pom owners would agree with me on this. poms are prone to breathing probs, this was our only answer to fix her overheated body!! no drugs, no doctors, they all said to give her drugs to help her breathing, some didn't know what the hell was wrong with my dog. i have had two poms in the last ten years and both have the joint and breathing probs that all poms are prone too!! i don't know where you live, but consider everything in your dogs environment when trying to help it overcome an illness. like i said, most pom owners woudl disagree with me, but i have (two) living proof that shaving your dogs is a good thing if necesary!! on a side note, use sunscreen on them when shaved...they burn like humans! good luck!

Cutting a dog to short is very dangerous for the dog. Sun burns and heat stroke can happen very easily now. So take extra percatuition. belive it or not a dogs coat insulates it for warmth AND also keeps it cool in the summer. A dog should never be shaved down, it gives a higher chance for it to die from the weather now. Please dont do it again. You may think you were helpign it, but in turn you may be harming it even worse.
Long hair dogs do fine in summer. I have a collie who hikes in the woods (Up cliffs down cliffs ect) for 3 hours a day. And he keeps up just fine, he is always 15 feet ahead of me, and full of energy. And thats becuase his coat helps keep him cool
Absolutely NOT! They are a double coated dog and it will ruin their coat and it doesn't grow back the same. OH NO!

i dont think so
Its not necessary to trim your dog's hair in the summer. There is a lot of debate on this issue b/c a lot of people believe the coat is an insulator and regulates the dog's temp, including during the summer. Your dog's hair will grow back, but it will most likely not grow in the same way it was. A lot of breeds have this issue and show breeders never shave them b/c the original coat will not come back in the same as before. I would keep your dog in the house during summer months with AC.
I think the reason why you decided to trim your dogs hair is because its summertime and you are afraid that it would be too hot for your dog. However, this method is just a logical way that we think and its not proven. For one thing, dogs do not have sweat glads, so unlike us they do not sweat to cool themselves. Having short fur will not help keep them cool because there is no sweat glads to cool in the first place. You see dogs sticking out their tongue and panting, that's how they cool themselves. Another thing to take note is that the dogs body cools from the bottom to the top, if you really want to remove the fur, it should be at the bottom.
The best way to keep the dog cool is to provide it with lots of water and if it gets too hot let it lie down on a pool of water or wet floor. You can also wet the bottom part of the dog. One more thing, dogs fur are like human hair, they will grow back so no worries if you gave your dog a bad haircut. Just don't tease her, they may not understand but they know you are laughing at them and she will get upset.
You've just ruined your dog's coat. You'll be extremely lucky if it grows back properly. Also, their coats protect them from the heat in the same way they do from the cold, so now your dog will be more prone to sunburn, heatstroke, parasites and skin damage, because you've taken away his protection.
