You didn't mention if your dog is an older dog, but I take for granted he is. Ask your vet about the two pain meds for dogs. I am surprised your vet did not recommend them to you. Rimidyl & Deramaxx. I have used both & they do help relieve pain. Out of the two Deramaxx is more expensive, but seems to help a little better than the Rimidyl. I had a dog that had cancer & a vet specialist introduced me to the deramaxx. I currently have a dog with hip-displasia & currently taking this med.If your vet doesn't carry these you can buy them on line but you'll need a perscription. Simply type in either & hit search. You'll find a couple different sites that sells these meds. Good luck & I hope this helps your dog!!

maybe you should discuss this with the vet? Let him know the motrin isnt working.. maybe he can prescribe something else.

Some pain meds need to be taken daily, not "as needed" because they prevent the swelling and inflamation that causes the pain.

some things that may help him.. put up ramps for him where there are steps, its much easier. Make sure he has a nice soft cushiony bed to lay on. Drs Fosters and Smith has some nice orthopedic beds. Glucosamine may help his joints too.
take him to the vet
It is said animals have a high tolorance to pain due to addrenilen. In the wild animals get attacked and live all the time, they heal and adapt. Thats not to say your dog in this situation is doing the same, but I would go to the vet for a bit more ideas. dont just jump into the pain killer thig for a long time fix, learn from the intenet about other situations like yours, read lots and try to see what might work best for your situation.
The majic pill is good till you can get into pain management.
Good luck
depends on age weather it is fixable of not. if he is young enough or is to live long. if it is worth it and you know he will live a long time longer then you can take him to professional animal hospitals which could either operate his leg to fix the problem or place some fixture to help him his legs stationary until it heals. if it is a physical accident such as a fall or something ususally it will cost a little but it seems you dont want to euthanize him so if its work it you should do it. usually most doctors will lie to you saying the problem is unfixable or to just get a new dog cause its not worth it. only true passionate people wil actually agree to fix problems cause surgery on an animal is very stressful as there are many preperations, people usually have minimal training, and most people would not waste their time to really help you. by the way what is ibuprofin?
WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF IT WERE YOU ????? TRY THAT ON HIM A HEATING PAD OR SOME CREAM ASK THE VET MAYBE ALOT OF REST A LITTLE EXERCISE AND ALOT OF TLC LET HIM REST AND STAY OFF HIS HIP TIL HE FEELS BETTER A HEATING PAD WILL HELP ALOT
Depends on what's causing the dog pain really. If it's arthritis, it's best to keep him/her warm, cold will actually make the pain worse. I'd just follow what the vet told you. My rottweiler had hip problems and the vet told me to grab both ends of a rolled up towel and put it underneath her belly and down by her back legs, then pull up and walk along side her. It takes alot of the weight off their hips so they're still able to walk but it's less stress on their hips. I did it when we went to bed and she had to go up the stairs, when I took her outside to use the bathroom, or anything that was more than just a walk across the room.
Try a different vet. My father is a veterinarian, and we were talking about the advancements in canine pain medication about two weeks ago. There are three new wonder drugs on the market, and my father says that he prescribed some to an arthritic Labrador, and a month later it came bounding in and it pranced around just like a puppy! I'm sorry, I don't know the names of the drugs, but you should either ask your vet about any new drugs available or switch. Good luck!
Glucosamine is supposed to be great for joint pain - but it won't work overnight. It may take a month or so to properly get into their system and start working.

Speak to your vet, or get a second opinion if you aren't happy with their management of your poor boy's pain. My 11 year old greyhound suffers from arthritis, and throughout winter we give her Phenylbutazone tablets to manage her condition. These are prescribed by vets and for us they have worked wonders.

Don't write him off just yet, there are still things you can do to give him a good quality of life and enjoy having him in yours for a bit longer yet.

Don't accept that Ibuprofen is all you can give him - it's not. There are some great drugs out there that will help him in leaps and bounds.
I do agree with talking to your vet. If he/she doesn't seem responsive to trying other alternatives, get a second opinion. You'd do the same for a human relative, wouldn't you?
If you are in the position where the only thing is to let him, yes, it'll be hard. I had to put down my wonderful dog of 14 years two days ago. It's just like losing a brother or sister. Hang in there and I do hope that he gets better.
Take care!
