When dogs get by each other, why do they sniff each others butts?

Question:

Answers:
Well, dogs are very scent oriented, meaning they can tell what gender and age another dog is by smelling it. The butt happens to be the most scent-filled and convinient area for dogs to smell each other. It is the same as if humans were to introduce themselves to each other :) This is also why they smell urine and feces, because scents are left behind by other dogs and they can pick up how long ago that dog was there, and many other things about the dog, even what last ate, and how healthy it is! The sense of smell to a dog is like our sense of sight! We depend on our sight more than most other senses, and dogs depend on scent!

its their way of getting to know each other
its how they konw the breed, age, and if they will like them
Its like you shaking hands with another person...they are greeting and getting to know each other.
Some times they do that, when the meet. But not when they get by them.
