Hi gie95961, you think you've got problems ?? My 120lb precious gem has escaped from 2 collars and two different types of BODY HARNESS !! (don't even ask how she managed that! I've no idea) She should be called Houdini !! I think they just think it's fun or a challenge.

I have a pit/pointer mix as well, about 6 mos old, and we have the same problem with her. She is VERY well-trained, but if we try to lock her up she will find a way to escape.

I read in a magazine dedicated to training "bully breeds" that pit bulls are well-known escape artists, and they will hurt themselves trying to escape.

I've resorted to locking mine up in a kennel when I'm gone.
First of all he has pit in him and no matter what people think they are very loving pets and love to be next to their owners. i have 2 full pits so I know. They are very destructive sometimes also. You may need to get an electric fence up so he will stay in the yard and will eventually learn that he has to stay in the yard and will learn his place. It is just his personality and there really isn't to much you can do about it.
He's your best bud
But are you doing what's best for him..

Start taking him for walks, Make him a larger dog run if he has to be left out, maybe pay your neighbor to take him out for a walk while your at work
answered your own question without knowing it.It is a PIT-POINTER MIX. Pit is high energy times 10, pointer is hunting breed. It wants to hunt, and has the intelligence to escape and go play safari, is what I'd wager, knowing dogs somewhat, and having had a runner or two in my family...have one now, part herding breed, which is why he does it.
That is a great buddy u have and I think he is not so much scared of you leaving that he is of just wanting to be with you! Some animals become "connected" to their owner and feel like you are in their pack and must be protected and in close range at all times- Try a net over the top of the cage just to make sure he does not get hurt on the road or animal control etc...
He is lonely and doesn't like being left alone. Maybe your neighbours could watch your dog when you are not home for a small fee or even free so your dog will have somebody there with him. Also getting another dog would probably help, but I wouldn't suggest just getting another dog for this reason.
It is so nice that your baby is so attached to you. In order to keep him safe, you’ll need to get a top to his dog run. Try adding a radio on country music next to his run, not too loud that it bothers your neighbors. The voices will keep him company. You can also buy some sprays that are supposed to calm the dog and help with the separation anxiety. He may also need some bitter apple on the stuff he is chewing on.
sounds you got a cool dog. my dog jumps over the fence all the time too, she's half german sheperd. i used to have 4 ft fence, and she jumps over them like it's nothing. and she just runs around the yard waiting for me to chase her. so i have to make the fence higher, to 5 1/2 ft. well now, she digs tunnels. and she's pretty good at hiding them from me too. i mean, she loves me and all, but i think sometimes i have to compete against a fast moving car on the street for her love.
Separation Anxiety.do not take the dog everywhere with you any longer, you are creating this problem as the dog is insecure away from you. I would suggest that you contact a professional that can come out and help you with getting rid of the separation anxiety.
first of all, let me tell you my dog is just like this with my husband.

so, here's the thing, think of you mom per say, when you were small, you always wanted to be with her. i'm not talking jr. high age i'm talking pre-school to first grade age.. you wanted to go to the store with her, you wanted to have lunch with her, she was pretty much your "god". Well, your dog is your child... same thing.
My husky does the same thing. he will squeeze through the back yard gate. and my dog is almost 1. As soon as you find a way to stop your dog please let me know and i will see if it works on mine.
You didn't give the age of your dog, or how you got him.

If he's a rescue dog, this could be baggage from how he was treated before. That could explain why he seems to have such severe separation anxiety.

You might want to talk to your vet. See if he feels that Acepromazine might help calm the dog a bit if you give him 1 10mg tablet just before you leave till you get him trained.

You may want to find a behaviorist or trainer to help him deal with separation.
Read Caesar Milan's book. Or, watch the Dog Whisper. Do you crate your dog? You really need to crate train him and also, how much exercise do you give him?? concentrated run time is so important.
Have a dog that some times when I just go outside for a little while he will act like I was gone for years. Some dogs just do not get time.
My dog gets it from his mother but not as bad. But if I worked out of house. I would have to put him on pills. Mine is not a training problem.
But I would try a dog behaviour trainer first.
