Question:I just had a major argument with my bro bout getting his dog vaccinated.I dont know much about the 6 in 1 but they say its better and cheaper.I am totaly against that i have had my pup vaccinated at the vet hes had his shots up to 4 months and is doing great. Can you please give me some fighting power to discourage my bro from getting the 6 in1 pack. Give me the ups and downs and the positives of using eitherand if using the 6 in 1 how often do you apply?
Answers:
There is nothing wrong with doing a 6 in 1, they are cheaper and you can give them yourself. You give them as often as you would normally get your dog vaccinated. They need there 8 week shots, 12 week boosters, and I believe 16 week boosters. But the vet has to do rabies. I give all the vaccines to my animals (horses and cats and plan on giving them to my dog, when I get one), I always give either a 4 in 1 or 5 in 1 for both my cats and horses.
if he's comfortable giving the shot himself, there is nothing wrong with it. However, I think its best to have a vet physically examining the pup, its also good to develop a reputation with your vet.
The vet will still have to do rabies at 16 weeks.
A 6 in 1 is not the current protocol for vaccinating a puppy. The American Animal Hospital Association has put the current recommendations on the net. This is the protocol used by all 27 U.S. vet schools. Here's the link

Over vaccinating or using too many vaccines at once can cause problems by overloading the pup's immune system
