A dog that is apartment adaptable?

Question:I want a dog that can easily live inside an apartment, not destructive, can live alone and fine if I excercise it everyday, gentle around children and protective of me if there are peeping toms or guys that break in my apartment to hurt me.

Suggestions?

Are there lots of dogs like this at Humane Society or just buy one?

Answers:
There are a wide variety of dog breeds both purebred and mixed that would do great in an apartment.
Go to : http://www.dogbreedinfo.com
There at the top of the page, you will see purebreds/ hybrids.
Go through the lists and decide what would fit your situation.
I hope this helps you and good Luck!

Get a cat instead. I really think its cruel for people to keep a dog in an apartment. Dogs need a yard. Sorry, but thats just my opinion.
Rat terriers sound like an ugly dog, but they arent. Mine was apartment trained and lived with me, my 7 yr old boy and our calico cat. The dog was about the same size as the cat only a little taller. Also known as "sheists", rat terriers are great companion dogs and very smart.
sum thinning Small lick a Yorke
Lots of great little or medium size dogs at shelters or the humane that will fit what you want.

Go take a look - get a grown dog, then you will know the personality of the dog and how it behaves.

You'll have no problem find one. Terrier, dachshund, great watch dogs and only need walks for exercise, just be sure they are used to kids.
There are tons of dogs like this at the Humane Society, the local pound or from rescues- look at their pictures, etc. on petfinder.com. It's a great idea to get a rescue dog- you'd be saving his life! The qualities you mentioned are definitely available in rescue dogs. Usually, the rescue or Humane Society will know the dog's personality, and can help you choose one that's not destructive, but is protective, etc. Good luck!
Yeah a 5lb yorkie's a great security dog- ATTACK FLUFFY!

There are lots of bigger dogs for security at the humane society- depending on where you are look for a very young pitbull you could train to be gentle with your family. Rotweillers, dobermans, all good options.
I have two boston terriers and they do fine inside. I actually take them regularly to the dog park or they go to doggie day care. They are great dogs and soo fun to have. They dont need as much exercise, because they have short noses and it gets hard for them to breath after alot of activity!
Believe it or not Great Danes are great apartment dogs. They have a low energy level, don't need much outdoor time, and will be fine if you just walk them morning and evening. They don't make the best guard dogs, however. Although it might lick an intruder to death.

Good Luck.
A small dog isn't going to be able to protect you agianst intruders very much. That being said, i would sugggest a Corgi. They like kids and they're cute with their tiny legs. Small dogs like Chiwawa's are usually one owner dogs (meaning they take to only one person and don't like others around. Of course there are exceptions.)
A Beagle! They aren't destructive, they can live alone! Need to stay active and enjoy running, so that won't be an issue. They are very patient with children and they can pack a bite and are extremely loyal! Beagles are good apartment dogs.
i live in an apartment and i have 3 dogs now, a pug, shih tzu, and a pekegnise/pug mix, and all three of them do just fine. I would suggest a smaller dog like the miniture breed/toy breeds.
First, check your contract to be sure you are allowed to have a dog. Then check for size restrictions and breed restrictions. Few apts will allow you to have a large dog. And, when I was looking, even fewer will allow breeds like Pit Bulls and Rottweilers.
Most seem to restrict the size to under 25 lbs.
The toy breeds all would do well in an apt. You can even box train them like a cat. They would need your children to be well behaved and not rough with them. They would bark, which is a deterent, but hardly a watch dog.
Most the other breeds under 25 lbs are terriers and they are too active and destructive for an apt.
Toy size dogs are hard to find in shelters. They go quick. I'd get on a waiting list with a rescue. You can find the closest rescues on www.petfinder.com
