7 month old west highland white terrier keeps throwing up yellow foam?

Question:Hi all,

For the past two weeks or so, our 7 month old west highland white terrier has been throwing up three to four times a night. We took him to the vet and they soaked him in subcutaneous fluids, then gave us Prescription Diet I/D to feed him and 1/4 tablets of Carafate. We fed him the Prescription Diet and gave him the Carafate until he ran out of both, and he was fine for the time that he was on that treatment. But now, he is back to throwing up. It seems to be only at night that it's happening, especially after he runs around or plays a lot with other dogs. When he throws up, it's an almost clear, yellow foam with no substance to it and nothing in it. He seems to be eating normally during the day, but when we give him food at night he won't eat it. Now, he just threw up and he seems very lethargic. The last time he vomited, it didn't even seem to be a struggle; it was almost like a projectile vomit. Any idea what it could be? Thanks.

You should call your vet. Pancreatitis is always a possibility, and very serious. Check that out first.

The yellow froth means his stomach is already empty and he is throwing up bile. My Westie did the same thing - throwing up at night almost every night, and several times a week during the day. He was eating Iams at the time. After years of this, I discovered it was a food allergy.

You don't say what you are feeding, but maybe you could try feeding a bland diet for a while, like white rice and chopped, boiled chicken breast (home made). My vet recommended this to me, and it worked for my Westie. Or, you could stick with Science Diet if your dog likes it and does OK on it.

My dog HATED Science Diet .These days, he eats only Cesars dog food - and my chicken and rice. Cesars is the one commercial food that he likes, that doesn't make him barf.

go to the vet again RIGHT NOW. they're the only ones who can tell u whats wrong
If he did well on the Hills Science Diet then you should keep him on it. My dog threw up really bad until we put him on Hills I/D and he was fine on it. We couldn't feed him anything else though or it would make him sick. Purebreeds quite often have very sensitive tummies. I know the dog food is expensive but I feel like it literaly added years and years to his life.
Find another Vet, FAST. This is serious, and potentially life-threatening. ..Has he been checked for worms?..
Yellow is empty stomach bile. He may have a food insensitivity or allergy. He could also have a liver condition, called a shunt, that pups can have. Your vet needs to run some tests to see whats going on. May or may not be serious.
take your dog to the vet ASAP!! ive had two dogs that started off like that and one had parvo and the other had kennel cough. if the dog doest get treated it can pass away from it, good luck!!
